Second opinion please

My wifes 2000 Expedtion with a 5.4 has a coolant leak, it is coming from where the heater hose goes into the intake manifold.

My question is, is it possible the housing for the heater hose can be resealed or is my intake manifold cracked (plastic)

If someone has had this problem or if it is a common problem, any help or suggestions would be helpful before I go out and spend $500 to get the parts

$500 ??? What are you buying, a used motor? Could be cracked and yes, very common problem with plastic manifold set ups. First determine and confirm the leak point before doing anything.

If it's the manifold. Complete - New and used setups can be had cheap on ebay.

You can also fix a cracked manifold. Another possibility, the gaskets go bad around the water jackets @ the front of the heads and leak. Common 5four problem.

Its spewing right in between the front injector and the heater hose you can see it accumulate in between them than begin to bubble from the heater hose side towards the injector

I have not found a cheap intake for a 5four yet, only 4six. the cheapest on the net I have found was 299

so should i look at a new manifold or try to fix the jackets

jbrew, are the jackets your talking about the metal housing that overlaps the intake on the right front of the intake, it looks as if bubbles are coming out from under where the heater hose goes in over top of the manifold.
I would hate to buy a manifold when all I need to do is replace a gasket

I actually bought the gaskets off of a recommendation from jbrew, he showed me that exact problem and said it was common, and probably led to my lean condition. I bought the gaskets and ended up selling the truck without putting them on. Sent you a reponse FF2007.

What's up jester

FORDFAN -

Water jackets below, I repaired these. -

Gaskets go bad here - common problem. You have the Plastic intake w/aluminum crossover. The plastic flange cracks just below the crossover.

If you search the "ENGINES" forum only, there's pics of your problem - I seen them before and I look for them in a little while when I have more time.

Worst case sinario for you -

Heads are pitted
Cracked manifold

Forget fixing that one, my bad -thinking of another. If cracked, just find another. The best STOCK manifolds for these are on the 99 5.4L's - Their aluminum (no plastic) - But those are hard to find. Most likley you'll find a plastic replacement cheaper.

Try http://car-part.com/ ~ Type your zip in and they will find you one close to home.

So I can bolt up a 99 intake manifold and skip having to buy another plastic one?

No other mods right?
I found one on the website you linked for $50, upper intake right?
