A PHP Gryphon, Edge Evolution, Superchips Xcal II or Xcla III, etc. They hold calibration files that are flashed into your PCM.

Check this forum.

A tuner (AKA chip or engine programmer) is an aftermarket add on that you can buy and install that will reprogram your truck's PCM (power train control module) to increase performance. Many of these tuners have settings that require higher octane fuel in order to maximize performance.

What they're really talking about is more properly called a "programmer". This is a device that you plug into your OBDII port (in front of you, below the steering column under the dash) and it can change the program stored in your vehicle's computer (called a PCM). With it, you can adjust things like timing, to take advantage of high octane gas's resistance to detonation.

A tuner is a person who can write a custom tune that can be stored in the programmer for your use. You can read all about programmers and get everyone's opinion (including mine) here: https://www.f150online.com/forums/ch...rogramming-34/

High octane gas is really not "better", and it's certainly not a "treat" for your engine. It is simply formlated differently than 87 octane and the added ingredients make it cost more.
