Synthetic back to Conventional?

My truck has had synthetic oil put in it from the start and I am getting tired of the price of the oil changes, $70-$90 is ridiculous when I could get conventional oil at a dealership around the corner and their conventional oil change is $12.00 and synthetic is $69.99.....However I know the rumor used to be once you use synthetic you cannot switch back but now I am reading all ove rhte internet that is not true. Any of you guys ever switched back?

why not use the motorcraft synthetic blend and motorcraft filter and change it yourself? Both are readily available at walmart and the motorcraft syn blend is cheaper than almost all the other oil on the shelf including conventional stuff!!!

Depends on which exact synthetic you have been using. If it's Gp3 dino based, no problem. If it's ester based, there could possibly be problems. If the cost is bothering you, just extend your change intervals. I would not use a straight dino oil no matter what, the semi-synthetic Motorcraft is the cheap way to go - along with a Motorcraft filter.

You're missing the point of using a full synthetic oil and I bet you change your oil every 3-5k miles, hu?? If you extended your oil out to just 10,000 miles, (up to 25,000 with Amsoil) which BTW you can more than safely do with a synthetic, then you are now on the other side of the coin and your synthetic oil changes are cheaper.

You guys that are holding on to the philosophy that changing your oil every 3k miles is a necessity and the sole reason your truck runs soo good are gonna get over it if the price of oil keeps going.

You can run the plain old Motorcraft semi out to 7500 miles now - if you are totally stuck on 3000 mile changes get the cheapest crap you can find.

Switching from synthetic to conventional oil is completely safe. If your OCIs are 7.5K or less synthetic oil is a waste of your money. I agree with earlier posters, if you wish to continue using synthetic oil push your change intervals out.

Though they're not as vocal as the synthetic oil users, there are plenty of high mileage conventional oil users on these forums. They suffer no ill effects from using less expensive oil. In fact, todays conventional and synthetic blend oils are excellent in quality and will serve you well.

When I bought by 2007 F-150 SuperCrew 5.4 3v., at the 1st oil change I used Mobil 1 exclusively for the next 18,000 miles! At the local WalMart I frequent the Mobil-1 oil kept creeping up in price, along with their gasoline too! So After hearing how many people have been having good luck with the MotorCraft Syn-Blend here, 5w-20, I switched to it & have never looked back! I haven't noticed any difference in my engines performance or noise, since switching to the MotorCraft Blend either! Seems just as smooth & quiet! Heck I even run the MotorCraft SuperDuty 15w-40 Diesel oil in my John Deere Diesel also!..........Cannot beat the price, or the quality!...........

Usually if your truck has high miles and it been on dyno oil all it life switching to synthetic could cause leaks.

Yes and no, Synthetic would not cause the leak it would only clear away the deposits built up on an already bad seal and allow it to leak. The problem was there, synthetic and its superior detergents will just allow you to notice it

They took care of that problem long ago. For one synthetic today is made quite a bit different.

1. - 10 years ago is considered the "Raw" synthetics era. For a decade now, evolution has tamed synthetic oils and aren't as harsh.

2. - Ford and others updated all internal and external gaskets to handle "Raw" synthetics that were used a decade ago - 1998 to be exact...

If the engines leak nowadays - it's usually from over-filling the crank case, that really f^cks sh^t up. Quicky lubes - NEVER trust them. Change your own oil and remember, the top mark on the dipstick DOESN'T mean full !!! It means MAX and just beyond that means over - filled - That causes leaks.

BTW - 246,000 miles using Castrol 50/50 Blend.

Don't change your habits, if there working...
