Diagnostic Codes and Cam Sensor

Hello:

Ford F150 V6 4.2 My check engine light is on and recent diagnostics gave me the following:

P1285
P0171
P0174
P0340

The mechanic determined that the Cam Positioning Sychronizer and Cam Positioning Sensor are defective and need to be replaced. They wanted $700.00 for parts and labor to replace them and I flipped my lid.

I'd like to try and do the work myself, but how difficult is it?

Is it just one sensor or sychronizer that need to be replaced or are there multiple sensors?

Any additional information you could provide on this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hit the SEARCH button and enter the P0340 code. Instructions are around here, you'll just need to dig a bit to find them.

Help

Hello:

I need help:

I referenced earlier posts on the subject and my chilton manual, however it's still not clear on the removal of the cam sensor and cam sychronizer.

First off.. I *think* I have located both pieces of hardware.

However getting to them is not clear in the chilton manual and it appears to involve remove many more items then has been presented in earlier threads.

I need to replace the Cam position sensor AND the cam position sychronizer.

From what I can see, that involves removing the air filter componensts and then a whole lot of other tubes and components just to get to the sensor/sychronizer. (I would love a picture of where it is located on a 4.2 F150.

So my question is.. am I looking at the correct hardware?

On a F-150, dead center in the engine, under the air filter and behing a bunch of things.. I *think* I see it.

But chilton doesn't reference this accurately.

From what I see, I need further instructions in regards to what all needs to be removed and tubes unnatached in order for me to reach it.

Can anyone provide further insight on this?

Please help and thanks for your input.

Help

Really:

I have a cam sensor, cam sychronizer and a tool to help me adjust it.

All I need to know is whether or not I'm looking at the right thing, and if so, what I need to remove in order to replace it.

I'm frustrated because I have referenced these boards and online, and chilton and I can't find the information I need in order to perform the replacement.

I'm trying to save 737.53, which was quoted for the repair by dirty thieves from "Groovy Automotive" in Austin Texas. I purchased a kit from Napa at the cost of 60.00, which included the sensor, synchronizer and synch tool, but I need help in replacement.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Ford F150 4.2L V6 2001.

Thanks

BTW.. did I mention they wanted to charge me 419.57 for both the sensor and synchronizer?

if its like the v8s which im sure it is the cam sensor is on the front of the head and has 2 wires going to it, just a small black plastic piece and has one bolt holding it on, literally takes 2 minutes to change

the synchro not so sure on that one
