Compatible engine for '98 4.6?

I have '98 F-150 with regular cab. 4.6l engine.

Since the day I bought this truck, it has had an oil leak. Long story short I let it get too low a couple of weeks back and now I need new motor or this one rebuilt. I have access to a 4.6l out of a '94 crown vic. Will this motor work?

Enigine code for my truck is the W version, according to the vin #. I say that becasue there is no 6 in my VIN at all. Which is the other option for 4.6l engine.

Thanks in advance for all the knowledge of this forum.

ps I am still driving this truck, luckily it hasn't popped the rod yet. But cold start up sounds like hell.

you should be able to find 4.6 triton at a junkyard no problem. the crown vic engine will drop right in. youll need to reuse your intake and exhaust manifolds. theyre might be some other computer stuff you have to change as well.

As Keith97 says. The base engines are the same. Just use the intake and exhaust manifolds and wire harness from your truck engine and you should be good to go. You can use your truck front cover but the Crown Vic front cover will work. Check the oil pan for any differences as well. The oil filter adapter should also be changed for clearance in the truck chassis if I remember right. Might be a couple other small things I can't remember. Good luck.

Don't use the 94 engine. It only has 4 crosbolted mains. Your's has 5. The 94 car front cover has fifteen 8mm holes. The truck front cover has ten 10mm holes and five 8mm holes. The bosses for the tensioner are in a different location. So you need to keep the car front cover if you swap. Go wild and do a 5.4 swap.

The 97-99 F-150 4.6s are the same so it would be an easy swap. If you go newer it still can work but there is a pit of adjusting that needs to be done.

I will assume that the truck engines would just be easier because I won't have to change the intake. Otherwise they are all the same?? If they are all the same why is it the parts store asks which motor code you have when you order parts? Keep in mind I have a W. 6 code is more common. I am assuming that 6 code is Romeo, and the W code is Windsor?? I am probably wrong, as that would make sense and nothing Ford does seems to make sense.

I was thinking this may just be a bad oil pump. Because that is what it sounds like to me. BUt then after looking at how to change the oil pump. I figure it is just as easy, and a sure cure to swap motors. Damn mod motors. Stupod owner forgetting to put in oil. Oh wait thats me.

Thanks again all.

The main difference between the car and truck engines are the intake manifolds and front covers. 6 is a Windsor Engine and W is a Romeo Engine. There are a few differences between the two engines and that is why they want the code.
Cam caps, rods, pistons, main bearing caps, crank and flywheel off the top of my head.
