there was a guy over on the crown vic site that took a small dremel tool spiral cutting bit and grinded a slot on top of the busted stud and he spun it out with a flathead screwdriver. of course this only works when its busted flsush with the manifol or a little above it.

I also think that I have the dreaded leak. What should something like that cost to repair?

Hey guys. I just completed this project on my 98 f150 4.6. Driver side manifold. The toughest part of getting the manifold off was getting the socket to the rusted bolts. Another universal socket would of been nice. But I made due with just one. I also had one broken stud on the rear. Gaskets were $12 from auto parts store. 2 piece design. Best advice I can give is spray the crap out of it with PB Blaster the night before and again a few hours before you attack it. Then for the busted stud I used a pair of vice grips.

I'm not sure if they still have them, but Ford used to offer copper plated stainless studs which were supposed to be much better than the factory studs. It's probably a worthwhile upgrade at least on the outermost studs.

jbrew, I'm impressed that you could remove the manifold studs with the Ryobi Impact. I assume it was this one?

It looks like you just let the rusted nuts stay on the studs and backed out the whole stud/nut assembly with the impact?

Thanks.........

Minimonster do you still have the 5.4 manifolds and do they fit a 0998 F250?
