Spark Plug Gap

I picked up some Motorcraft Platinum plugs today and the guy at the parts store told that if I tried to gap the plugs that I would damage them and to just install them as is. Well I installed one in my #2 cylinder that was misfiring and all is good for the time being. But I wanrted to get some input from you guys before tackling the rest. '02 5.4 w/97k mi.

Bart.

How are you supposed to check the gap? Never assume that it is correct from the factory. If you know what you are doing you will not mess up the plug. If you don't you could tear the platinum off the ground strap or electrode. Here is a pic of the tool that I use. It bends the ground strap to spread it apart and I tap the strap to close the gap.

I checked all mine when I installed them and 7 out of 8 where gapped right. Get a good spark plug tool and a feeler gage and be very gentle. If you have to change the gap do it like JMC suggested and you can't go wrong.
