Replacement Coils

Hey there. I am just getting things collected to do my spark plugs. I have read on here a lot that I should just get the Platinum Motorcraft plugs. Any other preferences? I have an 02 with a 5.4L. I was wondering about replacing my COPs also. I have read about the GLobal replacements and have them bookmarked on here but then I was drooling over the toys at Troyer. I noticed for like $300 they have COPs with 60,000 volts instead of the stock 14,000ish. Anyone see any great point in doing this?

NEVERMIND!!! I found the search button! lol. SORRY!!!

You need to stick to OEM plugs, if not, you will have problems. As far as coils go, I not sure if you need to replace them just because you are changing plugs. I wouls just replace the boots on the COP's. Ensure you use plenty of dielectric grease with the boots.

You dont need high voltage COP unless you have modified your engine. (nitro, super charger etc) I would stick with oem plugs. I have done alright with the aftermarket plugs on the V6 but not the V8

All Great info above!!! How many miles do you have on her? My factory set of coils went for 165,000 miles before I changed them.

I have 111,000 on the ticker. So....Back to the Iridium from Troyer vs. motorcraft Platinum. I think I might just get a set of the COPs from Global. I mean. Why not since I am doing everything else also.

Here is what I recommend and did. Change the boots first. Your coils should be good for at least 2 plug sets. What most people fail to consider is that the boot should be replaced when you would change plug wires. Failing to do so will risk coil failure because of the boot allowing arking. Buy new plugs. Just stay away from Bosch. Weather you choose the iridiums or OEM or what ever brand is up to you. I have run Troyer's Iridiums in the past. Good plug. I still have them laying around the house somewhere. Can't use them now, wrong heat range.

PS. I have a set of Global Automotive coils on the truck now.

COP's from Global

Quick question about the COP's from Global Automotive.....

I wish I had purchased these from Ebay before I had my plugs changed
6 months ago (friend/mechanic did them in heated garage for me).
Anyway, I noticed that on the OEM Motorcraft COP's, that there is a "metal barrel", connected to the spring, at the end of the boot, which sits on top of the plug. From what I have seen, all of the aftermarket COP's use just a longer spring, from the coil to the end of the boot, which I assume fits over the plug connector. I have one aftermarket COP on the truck now from the previous owner and it is set up that way, plus I checked NAPA's ($$$),
brand, it is the same way. Do Global COP's have just the spring, and I ssume if they do, it's fine.

After reading a few posts on changing of the COP's, (seems straight forward, but time consuming), I checked my truck and I noticed that the COP's on CYL's #7 & #8 are missing the hold down screws but the truck is running fine. If I find that a screw was broken off in the intake manifold, does anyone have an easy fix, or do I have to pull the intake and drill out the screws, tap, heli-coil them etc. It looks like #7 is just missing the bolt but I'm afraid #8 has a busted bolt. Without tearing things apart, I can't see what is going on w/ #3 & #4.

All info and advice is greatly appreciated.

PS: Jbrew, been weeks since my p0174 code has come back. My scanner has NO pending DTC's and all of my rediness monitors are re-set.
Running good !!!! Thanks !!

My OEM Cops just have a spring. My Global Automotive Cops just have a spring.
Personally I would fix the hold down bolts but I am **** that way.
