Replacement Coils
Thanks for the reply JMC.
My 5.4 has the springs as well on the OEM/Factories but the spring is shorter with a metal barrel attached at the end of the boot (plug end).
I feel comfortable now using just the spring. Like I said, truck runs great and I have 1 aftermarket coil on there already.
As far as the #7 coil, I was able to put a bend on a 7mm open-end wrench and get the 5mm threaded bolt in and tightened up. I will tear into the rest of them soon.
I have read different opinions on this forum about changing the coils.
I have 139000 miles and just figured it would be a good idea. But I have also read that I should just replace the boots and springs until I run into a problem.
Any thoughts ???
Thank You,
TJK

I have over 219000km on my truck. I replaced the boots twice in that period and just a few month ago replaced the coils. A lot of problems could be avoided if the boots were changed as often as one would change plug wires.

I agree - I NEVER use the stock boots anymore - gave that up awhile ago.
What do I use ? What works for me ?
The 1997-1998 Ford F150 and Mustang boots - A very heavy duty boot that's internal makeup is SS springs, Solid brass connectors, Solid copper rod w/heat shrink protection.
The only downfall is that they are easy to screw up. You have to very careful when removing the boot from the coil. That may be why they stopped making them - plus they look expensive on the inside.

Hey Jbrew,
Thanks for chiming in.
I pulled the boot off of my #1 cyl. and it looks just like the spring setup that you have in your picture.
Are the springs that come in the Global coils SS, and are they just a spring without the copper/shrink wrapped barrel.
The aftermarket coil that is on the #7 cyl. has just the long spring. Hard to believe that just the spring sitting on top of the plug is a practical setup.
In your opinion, with 139k on my truck, should I go ahead and order the Global coils or just replace the boots and springs. My local NAPA sells the boot and spring setup for $4.00 ea. I can save $65.00 by not putting on the coils, but I would rather perform prevent mait. The money isn't an issue, just want the truck to run as best as it can.
Thanks,
TJK

All springs are SS .
The boots and springs are called "connector kits". The best kits I've seen on the market are these -

Global Coils and this connector kit would be a good combo IMO. The "Ford Racing" connector kit is also show @ the link posted above. FR's aren't nothing special. The "HARDCORE" kit is the good one.

Those (blue) connector kits do look pretty nice.
Are you saying to buy the Global Coils and remove the boots and springs from them and use the "Blue" connectors.
I read somewhere that you used the Global COP's, did you install the complete
coil and connector assembly that is shown on the Global/ebay site.
From what I see on their site, they sell the coil, boot & spring connector as a one piece set (x8 of course)

Thanks again for your help.

I read your reply's more carefully this time and see that you answered my questions.
I have alot going on and I am hurrying too much.
I assumed you used the Global coils because you direct ppl to that site on this forum quite often.
See what assuming got me.... = confused.
Thanks for your help.

If you decide to go with the factory COPs or boots we have them. We are actually running a special on the COPs ($40 each) and the boots are cheap (less than $9.00 each) if you decide to go that route instead. Check us out at www.TascaParts.com

I can definitely say the Motoblue connectors and boots are nice! I just installed them. The connectors are really heavy duty and should perform much better than those little "Springy" things..... The boots are nice as well. No matter which COP I install in the future, they will all have these boots and connectors! Trust me, they are very heavy duty and well built!
