Take your truck to have the plugs changed and they bust one doing the job then dont pay. Not your fault. You took it there because Ford are the experts at repairing FORD's.

If you Pay for more than the plug change then Tell them you want a 30'000 warranty on the engine after this work is carried out.

Happens all the time at Finning. Simple Injector change can lead to a $30'000 repair.

Customer simply does not pay it. Not there Problem. Not Caterpillar's Problem either. All down to the dealer. Probably dont help you now thou and I am sorry you have to go through all this crap.

I was talking to a friend last night who happens to be a certified Ford tech.. known him for a long time, great guy. He said he has never broken a plug (knock on wood), when he does plug changes he follows the TSB to the letter and doesn't have problems. He said other guys get in a rush, and that's when stuff breaks. Also said that anytime they break a plug, the dealer pays for the full repair. It's the techs fault, not the guy who brought it in. Make sure you call Ford customer service and raise holy hell. No way you should pay more than what was quoted for the plug change. Call them early, call them often. He said that is absolutly on the dealership to make it right, not your responsibilty at all.

Call 313-322-3000, hit 1 for English, then hit 3 for Customer support.
Don't give in, keep calling until you get someone who will talk to you.
Ford Hdqrt's might help but my experience is, they will hand it down to
the Regional Manager's and then to the Individual State Dealership Reps (in your case Indiana).

I worked for a large Japanese Co. (not auto maker) and we primarly worked with the "Big 3" auto makers and their Tier 1 & 2 suppliers. Anytime I ran into garbage and couldn't get anywhere, I called Hdqrt's. You will find that they will want to help and at your request give you regional and local managers that have some pull.

Bottom line, you set up service appointment for plug change. Service should of been approx. $250.00. Dealer calls and states your plug maintenace charge is $2500.00. Give them the details, they will want to hear this from you.

Good Luck, I'm feeling really bad for you right about now.

I'm telling ya, call Dearborn. I really think this will get you somewhere.
I bought a new 2001 Mustang GT from my Local dealership and went in for routine oil change & warranty repair. Somehow, when they were lifting the car, it slipped a bit on the lift and caused a bunch of damage (mech and body). (No, It didn't fall off the lift). They showed me what happened right away, told me they will get it showroom new and gave me a loaner plus 3 free future oil changes for my grief. When I picked up the car, they had it on the lift to show me all of the repair work underneath and then brought it down to show me the body work.
My point, some dealers are way better than other's. I have a Ford dealer who is closer but just can't get the same quality service and don't trust them.
Check to see if the dealer/stealer you are working with has had past issues with poor service. Check your local BBB, etc.

Call Dearborn !!! Let us know how you make out with that call.

Good Luck,

It's the techs fault

I'm Ford Master Certified and I broke four, I also follow the bulletin to the tee.....it can and WILL happen no matter how good you are. They are a time bomb just waiting to blow.

Additonal Recourse

you have one additional course of action. If the dealer and Ford are not cooperating pay the entire bill with a major credit card and then call up the credit card company and dispute the charges.

At that point the credit card company will reverse the charges to your account and put the bill on hold. The credit card company will not pay the dealer until there is mutual agreement between you and the dealer.

the down side is that the credit card company may try to influence you to pay a significant amount of the bill - maybe 50%.

if you can be without the vehicle keep shooting for paying the amount of the plug change. The broken plug is through not fault of your own, the truck did not have a broken plug when you took it in. You are not being unreasonable in expecting to pay for what you authorized Ford to do. Ford quoted the job and accepted the job without lisiting any contractural exclusions, contingencies or consequences.

I guess i didn't mean it was the techs fault, per say. The techs who work on these vehicles didn't design them, but i wish you guys had 5 minutes alone in a dark alley with the guys who did. I know everytime i change oil in mine and have to turn the wheel all the way to the right in order to get the filter out while it lubricates my crossmember, i say a few words in their honor.

Didn't mean to lay blame on the good techs, it's Fords design, not yours. My apologies..

Well I called the dealer 1st thing this morning & told them I was not paying for any extra money. The service advisor told me that he would have to call me back later about that. He called me back in the afternoon & said the truck is done. I was ready to hear some crazy total but to my suprise they stated that they were eating the bill. The dealer said Ford was not covering any of the bill & they knew that I was not paying for anyhting extra so they just went ahead & took the hit. It was the best news in a week for me. I also had them change the fuel filter & replace the factory belt with a gatorback belt too. I provided my own spark plugs & the gatorback belt & I had the dealer install the replc. fuel filter and bought it thru them. All said & done my total bill including the fuel filter & labor for everything came to $466 and some change. I am very happy & confident know in my local Ford dealer now that they made the right decision and not charge me. Thanks to all who helped me out and I wish that nobody has to go thru this again.

I'm very glad for you that the dealer decided to do the right thing by you! These FORD dealers had better if they want to stay in business, especially in this Ecomony! Now someday maybe you will buy another Ford Product......even from that particular dealer! Congradulations for standing your ground on this matter!.........

You know the bad thing is that it really is a Ford problem since they choosed the crappy plug & now they are making their own dealers pay. The bad thing is that when things like this happen it just forces dealers to up their labor rate so they can in turn make their money back off a another customer in the long run.

Yeah, it sure is a FORD problem no question about that! I'm so amazed that the FoMoCo has not come up with a replacement one piece plug similar to the new Champion Plug! I mean give me a break! They could install the updated one piece plug when these trucks which by the way are in the Millions come in for routine service! If they break, Oh well FORD must eat it, however after they install an updated one piece plug the problem would be over for that particular vehicle! I mean that is just good business, I hate to mention Toyota but look at what they are doing for their customers with the Tacoma Fiasco! It's just good business! Customers really remember these type of thigs!........Just my opinion however!.............

That's great news Hopefully other dealers will start to take this stance.

Hey, Give your dealer a free advertizement of a job well done. Give the name and tell them you posted on this site that they did the right thing. I feel that when credit is deserving, give it too them. Maybe there are others in your neck of the woods that would give them business for their fair play...Let us all know who it was...

Here is a link to their website below. If anybody is looking for a vehicle and you are around the area give them a chance. A local family runs & owns several dealerships here inRichmond, Indiana.I bought my truck thru their Dodge dealer on the used lot so maybe that helped out for the fact that I did buy it from them. Just got back from driving the truck with the brisk plugs in it & the truck runs perfect. Troyer told me to have them gapped at .38 for my application. I will report back if I have any problems with them in the future.

if what you say it true then your dealer did a very good job of taking care of you. it is disappointing to hear that ford would do nothing for you.....ofcourse what can they do being that they appear to be going under. still never the less it is disappointing. with that said I think I am going to go back to driving an old chevy truck and a honda.
