so another question

To do this right, does on get it stroked out and such? I have rebuilt deisels and re honed cylinder walls, but not too confident on rebuilding a gas job. Not afraid of learning and jumping into it, but just want to do this right.

I have engine stand and all, some other specialty tools needed I'm sure, but must be simple enough to do with it being an older engine correct?

Thanks Again here, I can tell you know your stuff.

Ryan

Mechanical rebuilding should be similar to doing a diesel - honing cylinder walls, replacing pistons/rings, measuring gaps and clearances, measuring bearing clearances, etc. I'd send the heads out to a machine shop to get the surface trued and the valves ground, seals replaced, etc. The basic concept will never change.

No, the ratios are not the same, and the E4OD has a locking torque converter.

The 4R100 is basically a renamed E4OD with a different TC and some minor internals. The C6 is very strong, but also very inefficient and robs a lot of horsepower.

To do this project right, your two choices for automatics are the E4OD or C6.

E4OD - need to find a donor truck to get the tranny/harness/computer out of a '89-'95 F-2/350 with the 460. While you are there, I would grab all the top end of the motor and EFI stuffs to make the package work together.

C6 - Much simpler as then you could even run a carb, but this is a big step backwords. No overdrive, locking torque converter, and not the best job you could do.

Personally if my project I'd run a five speed ZF and convert the 460 to EFI.

If you want a manual, why have we been talking about C6's and E4OD's?

If you want a manual, you want a ZF5. Granny 1st, 5th is overdrive.

Yup, one of two choices also. Only bolt pattern you will find for a 460 in a stick is the four speed T-18 and the five speed ZF S5-42 or 47.

Check out the tranny sticky in the tranny section for more detailed info.

The ZF is a much better choice than a T18, the ratio spreads are similar, but the ZF has an overdrive 5th, the T18 is direct 4th. Both are strong trannys, but are not designed to be shifted quickly, they are heavy duty truck trannys.

Maybe what you need is an old 4 speed Ford "Toploader" out of a car with a big block - if it will bolt onto a 460. Those trannys date back to the '60's.

my question is why do you want all this ''performace'' you keep saying you want to have strongest tranny to tow. but you want quickness. im sure the 460 was desinged to work. not haul *** racing a mustang or something. besides what are you even towin that you need all that for
