Problems with error code readers

I took my 2003 F-150 Supercrew 4.6L (74500 miles)that just recently started stalling when I stop, to Advanced Auto and Auto Zone to have them read my error code. Both times it did not return a code by the service engine soon light is on. My local Ford dealership wants $58 just to tell me the code. Anybody else having problems with code readers?

Symptoms: Runs fine when in gear and giving it gas. When I stop, the engine drops to 400-600 rpms and/or stalls. Riding the brake at stoplights seems to help. In neutral, engine idles fine for a minute or two then fluctuates, engines rocks hard.

Thanks

Clean your IAC, and sounds like the fuse for the DLC is blown. Get your owners manual out and find out which one it is(prob. combined with the cig. lighter)

See if another auto zone will give it shot.

This could be MAF or TPS sensor related.

Could be a vacuum leak.

I would disconnect the battery, Clean the MAF sensor and look at all the vac hoses real well. Check for bad ones. Go over the PCV system, check everything their. Test the EGR valve, might as well. Change the air filter, check the regulator , pump pressure.

Strange that you get a light , but their reader wont pic it up.

Clean your data terminal.

Without the ability to read codes that are set , you have some work to do .

BTW - This isn't a common problem - "unable to read codes"

I'd suggest it is common. After all, you've seen it discussed enough times to know to suggest that the cigar lighter fuse be checked first.

Oh yea, I recall something of the sort now that you mention it, but common ? Nah, I wouldn't call it what it wasn't - Not IMO anyway or in the engines forum.

Well, there yuh go . Fix that fuse and go get her read

You guys are great

Just returning to forum. I went out and checked the lighter and it doesn't work. Not a smoker, never used it. I'll check fuses and give code reader another try.
Thanks again.

Check for vacuum leaks, esp. in the PCV system and clean the MAF.

Getting better

Replaced fuel filter and cleaned MAF. Trying to locate new IAC locally, will probably have to order. Until then, can the IAC be cleaned. Also, not sure which hose is what, but I check the hoses coming out of the valve covers and the passenger side has a strong suction by the driver side does not.
Any pictures of vacuum hoses or PCV?

Symptoms: Idles about 700-750 in neutral (rocks a little) and fluctuates 400-700 in gear. When I'm stopped, I've noticed a slight ping or knock when I give it gas to start going.

Check the PCV elbow back by the firewall. This is a very common source of a vacuum leak, it softens and splits.

Confirmed: PCV elbow

First let me say thanks to everyone that replied. This is a great forum and you guys make it that way. The elbow was sunken in and rotten. Any suggestions on how to replace it. It's not easy to get to. Did you remove other parts? If so, do need to buy any new gaskets when I get the pcv elbow/hose?

Thanks again.
