Mis-Fire Woes......
Mis-Fire Woes......
So not long back i installed a set of NGK Iridium plugs, A set of Accel Coils, and a set of Ford Racing 9mm Plugwires. It ran fine for about 400 miles. I left on a crosscountry trip the day after i installed them and not 400 miles latter i was getting a mis-fire on the #8 cylinder. I looked under the hood and the plug wire was off the plug clicking.
Easy Fix. Except that it did it 16 more times in a 300 mile stretch. Every time that it was misfiring i would get out in the wonderful blizzard and put the boot back on. I tried to crimp the metal inside the plug boot to fit more snug. I was able to get it to stay and about that time the #6 cylinder was doing the same..... Then the #7.
I couldn't get it to stay on. Well i pulled all of them off and crimped all the boots. It was running fine for about 250 miles and then it went down hill fast. I had a bad mis fire and i checked all the boots. None were off. So i swapped my old coils to see if they were the problem. NOPE!!!! I was in the middle of nowhere and had limited tools. I drove the truck to the nearest dealership and the service manager himself worked on it on a Saturday. Great Service!
He told me that he had found the #6 plug only in the head by 3/4's of a thread. They screwed it back down and sent me on my way. I made it about 25 miles and it was misfiring again. I pulled in and got a hotel. To make a long story short i found 2 more plugs loose. I tightened them down and it drove fine for about 10 miles and it is all back.
What do i do. It is stumbling on its face at low RPM's and under a load.
Like i said i have checked all the plugs to make sure they are tight.
Jbrew..... these plugs are spitn out like autolights!!!!

WOW! NO SH^T!!
This is a new one - never heard of such a problem before. What is going on buddy ?
Strange problem - Huh, well, Damn lol - Once you thread the plugs all the way in snug, without a ratchet, back them off about 1/2-1 turn and check the wobble. Compare that to one of your old plugs to determine a plug thread problem. You may have defective plugs w/bad thread cuts.
The wire problem - Compare with your old wires and also compare the actual plug tops with your old.
Something is obviously different. A good inspection of the new hardware against the old should reveal differences that would lead to the problems.
Definitely post what you find . Post your NGK plug numbers as-well .
That SUCKS!

not to mention that we had problems throwing my edge in my dads expy. It froze about 4/5ths the way. Had to go and have it reflashed at ford today. I cant win for losing!!!!!

Im guna pull the plugs and wires again tonight and see whats up. It seems like every time i do it i find a plug loose and its only been 30 miles in between.
I will post my plug part numbers when i get done. this sucks. Im on the road and all i have is a ratchet set!!!!
Thats all i need but it still isn't fun working in the snow in salt lake in a hotel parking lot. I still have to make it home.
The service manager stated that the plug wires from ford racing dont fit at all. He replaced the #6 plug with a motor craft plug. I have a brand new set of Motor Craft Double Plats at home that are going in as soon as i get home. But thats 700 miles away.
Any suggestions?
What old parts do you have with you , if any? Have the plugs been over torqued by chance ? 700 miles is good 10 hour + drive. Is it missing @ cruising speeds?
Idunno , I wouldn't want to chance making the situation worse. I would prolly just eat the cost of a new set of wires and Motorcraft plugs before I headed home.

Geezzz, you have your old wires too? Mannn, I wouldn't want to take off with it running like that. If you can afford it - I would just put the original OEMs back on it , whether I had to buy new or not. I can't see doing 700 miles with it like it is..Sucks...
yeah im thinking the 9MM wires are a lil to big for the 4.6L Also i thought NGK's were only good if ur running boost/ Nitrous? i drove 80 mile on 7 Cyls it sounded pretty funny for most of the time. i say ur best bet is to get home and put those Motorcrafts in and put the nomal 8MM wires back on. i tryed 8.5 wires and bocsh and Auto lite double plates.... and then i wised up and just got motor craft 8MM wires and motor craft platt. plugs...my truck runs fine. lol that sticker under the hood is there for a good reason right Jbrew??? Motorcraft Filters and Plugs ONLY! i think u got a pic of that sticker some were Jbrew lol. but that sucks i was looking at some 9MM wires to but i hate spark plugs/ anything to do with them after going threw 3 sets and 2 wire sets.... i said ok its gonna get what it calls for!!! and it works fine. That really sucks thoe maybe write a letter to were ever u got the 9MM wires from and let them know whats up!!

Yea , I have that sticker around here somewhere -

This circus sounds like the plugs were not torqued and cylinder leakage is blowing the boots out of the wells.
What plug type did you use?
They have to be 14mm 5/8" hex with an .708 reach and taper seal.
Should never have this kind of problem in mutiple cylinders unless something is wrong. If they were over torqued and pulled the threads out of the head, then you got big problems now.
Sometimes it may be found that the plug insulators are slieghtly smaller in diameter and not be gripped by the boots very hard on some other makes of plugs, otherwise they work fine.
The problem is right there ready to bite you for the looking.
Good luck.

Do you think the heads are damaged, or the NGK's are causing the problem ?
I know NGK has quite a few plug styles for our motors. Thing is, I never heard one bad thing about NGK ----ever..
If they were over torqued, I'm not sure a new set of Motorcrafts would even help. But , I know you've been around here long enough to know , not to do that ..
Good luck with it and on the ride home, let us know how it turns out .
