oil light on

i have a 2000 f150 6 cyl. and the oil light came on. the oil was a little low so i added some and it still is on. i dont want to keep starting it if no oil is getting through. does anyone know how to check the oil sending unit or if the oil pump is working?

one way is to have a helper sit in the truck with the key on... not running... and you pull the wire off of the sender unit. The light should go out. if it doesn't, you have a short in the wire somewhere. Not likely though. a sending unit is only a few bucks... just put a new one in. If you really want to be sure, get a oil pressure gauge and take out the sender and hook up the gauge..temperary if you want so you can check the oil pressure. If I am not mistaken, you have the 4.2 V6? I do believe that they have hydrolic lifters. If you weren't getting oil, the engine would make such a rattling racket you would know you didn't have oil. If it was my truck, I would start it and idle it until you hear a rattle from the lifters and then shut if off right away. If no rattle, then you have oil pressure.

The oil pressure sending switches fail with amazing regularity.

Just replace it.
