Fan Removal

How the heck are you guys getting your fan off? I tried twice this weekend and I just can't get it off. The pulley is turning in belt when trying to turn the nut that connects the water pump to the fan clutch.

I am ready for some ideas. I got my intercooler stuff mounted for my Roush S/C but can't get the fan off.

Thanks,
Greg

what i did was got a really long punch and put it on the nut of the clutch fan and hit it and it broke loose and i could hand twist it off.. after 5-6 hours of trying with a wrench i wacked it with the punch and it came right off

A long flat screwdriver between to of the water pump bolts and the shaft will keep the fan from turning while using a wrench on the fan nut.

If you can't get it off - Auto Zone will rent you the tool to do it. It takes a couple custom fan wrenches to get it.

Fan Clutch Holding Tool

Fan Clutch Wrench

1. Use the fan clutch holding tool to hold the water pump pulley steady.

2. Use the fan clutch wrench to remove the fan blade and the fan clutch

I will check out Autozone. I went to Orielly's but their fan removal tool didn't fit mine. So I am assuming the large holding tool will slip over the outside pattern of the 4 pulley bolts and then the long wrench is for turning the large center nut?

autozone has em. i know it says they are for the old 4.9 I6 ford motor but they work great!

If you need even more torque to bust them loose you can put a ratchet or a break bar in the square holes at the end of the wrench

Picked up the kit at Autozone during lunch, looks like it will do the trick. If the rain holds out I will attempt it tonight.

Thanks,
Greg

I second the punch idea, long piece of solid steel bar stock and a little PB blaster and she came off like butter, used a rachet to hold the pump pulley fairly steady by one of its bolt heads.

Not usually.

The easy way to know which way to turn it is whichever way the fan spins when it's running. Otherwise it would unscrew itself in normal operation.
