Why not follow Ford 5w20 oil recommendation while the truck is under warranty? Not everyone has the time to go to court to prove that the oil they used did not cause the problem. Now I understand why Ford should start denying warranty work.

Exactly. Why run the risk of having the hassle. My life is too complicated already. If I had an engine problem, that is one less battle to fight.

Good point guys... but I don't think I will have any problems so... to each his own. Plus, if it came down to going to court, I may just take the opertunity to try and purchase a used, low mile 5.4 . As long as your rockin a Ford, I guess we agree on something !

That's called good maintenance BONEHEAD !!

It is irrelevant that he has a older truck. To make a blanket statement to change at 3K is the point. Why should we all change at 3K? Have you done oil analysis? Id bet your oil is still working long past 5K unless you never drive on pavement or redline it most of the day. It's a waste of money and resources for all of us to simply 'change at 3,000'. Not needed in most cases especially people running a blended or fully synthetic. Why not change plugs and tranny fluid every 3K while your at it??

So your saying change your plugs and tranny fluid every 3000 , but not your oil? Yea okay, that explains it.

It's sarcasm, to make a point. Why change them if you don't need too.

How about this? Read your owner's manual, copy down the recommendations and applicable specs. Read the maintenance schedule, pay attention to the definitions for "normal" and "severe" (special operating conditions) service.

Then go ahead and use whatever oil and filter you want, as long as it MEETS THE SPECS, and change it at LEAST as often as specified in the schedule. This will cover your ***.

Straight from the 2008 owner's manual:

To protect your engine's warranty, use Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 or an equivalent SAE 5W-20 oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C930-A.
There are other weight oils that meet the applicable API specs, but in order for an oil to be a 930 oil, it must be a 5W20. Go ahead and use alternatives as long as they meet API, but there is a risk to your warranty if push comes to shove. Some dealers will look for the least little thing to deny a warranty claim, rightly or wrongly. You will probably win in the end but you will have to endure a lot of hassles.

Off warranty? Use whatever the heck you want, if the engine self-destructs it's YOUR problem.

Maybe if we all changed our oil when it actually needed it we could lower gas prices by using less oil freeing it up to be made into gas. [/sarcasm]

Yea , I don't really think the testing holds much water . Not when the oil that's drained @ 3000 miles is dirty. If it was indeed clean and not as contaminated as it is , then I might go for it..

It still looks clean on the stick , but not when drained.

This was a pick up tube from a 3.8L - I cleaned off some of it, it was almost totally plugged. When I pulled the filter, it was dry. The lady was honest and said she had added oil , but never changed it

BUT! She got 60,000 miles out of that motor (Windstar Engine).
