alternator question

Does the stock alternator put out enough juice to run an electric winch or would i have to upgrade. What about the battery too. Would i have to upgrade that when i get a winch.

How much power does the winch require
How big/old is the battery
How much power does the alternator put out
You may be alright with just a high performance battery depending on how big the winch is, or you may be alright as is

How big of a winch? Which alternator do you have, 130 or 110amp? Do you run the winch everyday or just once in a while when you end up like me?

Id only be usin it for when my truck ends up like yurs in your sig there twintips. Or to pull people out when they get stuck. Id have to look and see if i have the 110 or 130 amp alt. How can i tell does it say on it anywhere. Or would i have to get it tested. I just have a wal-mart special battery in there now. I wanna say it was somethin like 630 cold crankin amps. Its about 2 years old. Id go look now but im out of state. The winch im lookin at is the Warn XD9000i Electric Winch 9,000 Lb. capacity.

Here is all the info on it.

My opionion I would swap your battery for an optima yellow top and see how it does-maybe put a voltmeter on it when its under load and see if it drops voltage alot for weather or not to get a high output alternator, but I would be getting a optima yellowtop for sure and see what it does from there

X2 on the good battery. Optimas are great but there are otheres. As long as you get a ton of CCA, as long as you have a 130 amp alt. I wouldn't do it on a 110.

Yes there is other good brand batteries-I chose optima yellow top because of being deep cycle holds more juice longer. Not sure who all carries the optima, I got mine at summit racing. I think autozone has the duralast gold which is good-and cheaper-but I dont think its deep cycle so it holds less juice i think

It wouldn't hurt to replace the battery with a good deep cycle battery, optimally you should have a switched dual battery setup, one normal battery for the truck loads and one deep cycle for the winch, both of them run through a make before break switch.
