Pull DTCs without scanner or programmer?
Pull DTCs without scanner or programmer?
I have an 05 F-150 and need to pull codes but seeing as though it is Christmas day, everyone is closed. The problem I have having is it runs extrememly rough and I can smell raw fuel from the exhaust. I think it is either a spark plug not firing or an injector stuck open. The check engine is on and occasionally flashes. It backfires out the exhaust every so often as well. I would rest easier if I had an idea what the problem was tonight.
Is there a way to pull codes from the dash without a scanner or programmer. I know the Dodges have this feature and the Mustangs do as well.

Yeah you have to use a paper clips to jumps ports on the OBD harness then count the flashes of the MIL light, I do not know the procedure, but i DO know that a flashin MIL light means something is bad enough to cause catalyst damage or engine damage. (A bad code). Probably a misfire, a misfire can send raw fuel through the cat converters (NOT GOOD). Thats why it is flashing, to tell you it needs to be addressed ASAP.
Hopefully somone else can walk you through the paper clip routine. I've never done it, good luck!

Folks, the 05 is the latest CAN system.
No paper clip reading.
This went out with the last EEC systems, about 1996.
Your now in the second generation PCM OBDII systems.
With the right tools, you might be able to find which cylinder is the fault or remove one injector plug at a time to see which one makes no difference in idle.

Yep, took it into the dealership and sure enough the #8 injector was stuck open. Replaced under new TSB for free.
What sucks is that they only replaced the one injector. Now there is still a chance of this happening again to the other 7. Oh well, hopefully it happens before 110K miles.
