Starting problems..

Hope someone can give me a bit of direction here...
i have a 98' F150, 4.2 with about 280K Kms.... and just very recently having problems starting it. I at first thought the battery was on the fritz or the alternator, but the battery tested out ok and the alternator is putting out over 14V when it WAS starting. Over a period of time, starting has become tougher, and it has seemed like the battery was dying... but its not. all the connections are good and the starter cable from the battery HAS been replaced within the last year.. Not sure if its the starter or the solenoid. It only now just 'clicks' but was recently turning over (poorly). So now im not quite sure where to look. Ideas??
Thanks...

Take the starter to the parts store and have it checked.

these engines 4.2 are notorious for intake leakes.
sometimes coolant gets in the cylender and locks it up.
