My 4x2 was a PITA, but my 01 screw, which is lifted 6", is so easy. I just reach up and grab it

OhioLariet, will that socket type filter wrench fit the ford filters? The two I tried at auto store would not fit onto the motorcraft filters which have many more indentations than any other brand. Thanks,

On my 03 FX4, after trying to get the filter off by going underneath and up through the driver's side between the tire and the engine, I've found that removing my front OEM skidplate is much easier to access the filter. It's right there. 6 / 10mm bolts and the skidplate is off. I've got my oil changes done to about 20 minutes now. There is no way I could get 2 hands around the filter. Now, there's no need after removing the skidplate, pretty easy job IMO for anyone who has a similar set up on the old body style trucks.

Are the 04+s really that much of a PITA???

the very best method I have found for taking off really stuck filters is to wrap the filter with several wraps of coarsed grit emery cloth that comes in rolls about 1.5 inches wide. generates tremendous gripping and turning force and doesn't collapse the filter. Of course you must have a strong grip and at least average arm strength.

Never thought about an alternate lube. Good idea!

The emery cloth is a good tip, too. Might have to try that.

Don't know, John. I just found that in a search. I use a universal wrench similar to the one I posted earlier.

I took a motorcraft filter with me today and stopped at pep boys and they had several different styles/sizes. I did find one that fit the motorcraft filter. Thanks,

Sorry, I had to throw that in there. That was a pic of the 98 5.4. My kids 98 4.2 is underneath but it's not that bad to change. The worst one here by far is 01 5.4L - That one will get yuh cussing. You barley have enough room to weave on hand in their. Then when you manage to get the damn thing off , you make a hell of a mess getting it out of there .. It sucks ..
