Knock Knock - Who's there?
Hey fellas,
I have a 93' f150 5.0 liter with 120,000 miles on it. And I can honestly say that I haven't had any major problems out of it until now. Well....., here goes........
A week ago I put in a new radiator, changed the oil, spark plugs, air filter, pcv valve, plug wires, and oil filter. Everything was just rosy until I was coming home from work (on the expressway) and I noticed my truck was losing power. Needless to say I began to hear a loud knocking sound. I immediately pulled over and shut it down....sat for about 15 minutes in horror and then I started it back up again. The loud knocking was still there. I called for a tow truck and when the guy came he said it sounded like I threw a rod. After I got it home I let it sit for a few hours then started it up again and I noticed the oil pressure gauge was on Low. I've never had to get this deep into an engine before but I've got my sleeves rolled up and ready for some work..but I need some knowledge.
Can some of you guys point me in the right direction here. Where do I begin. What do I do first? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
Also just a side note: I'm 15 yrs. UAW. (Ford) I ain't afraid of getting dirty.
Thanks in advance.

well...
if you aren't afraid of getting dirty and you really did throw a rod i would say get yourself a crate motor and a few performance parts, nothing truly insane, but enough to have fun with. build the new motor and drop it in. 5.0's are pretty easy to find. beyond that i would be sure you're not just low on oil before you drop 3 grand on a motor and performance.

remove the oil filter, cut it open and look for part numbers. after that you can pull the oil pan and look around, rod bearing can be replaced at that time but that probably won't help, you'll need a complete tear down. you can also remove the valve covers and look in there for a bent push rod. if it still runs you can start it, pull each plug wire one at a time, if the nock goes away you found the bad cyl.
I'd just have it rebuilt. Make sure you have it tested for cracks. I have a pal who had a Bronco that the main bearing webbing failed on. It should only cost 2 grand to have it all rebuilt unless you go for performance parts..
A crate engine will do you good, if, you plan on keeping it a long time.
This is cheaper than a rebuild and you can't beat the warranty: http://www.promarengine.com/productd...odId=425&SP=--
Good luck!
