Fast idle at start up

Hi,
I'm new to this site so forgive me if this ? has been answered before.
I have a 2005 F150 FX4 with 5.4 Triton with 40,000 miles. At start up in morning after sitting all night or for more than 4 hours or so it idles really high to about 1750 - 2000 rpm whether it's cold or warm outside. It will go down after about 15 seconds or so to about 750 or 1000. If I put it in gear at 1750 it drops down. Is this normal? What can be causing this? Can this damage the engine? It's got to the point where I'll start the truck and let it idle back down before shifting. I know it's only 15 -20 seconds or so, but it's aggravating.
I also have the Hypertech Programmer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Rest at ease my friend, this is normal. This is like the olden days of automatic chokes for your carb. The motor will run at higher rpm's till it gets to a sertain temp. It is a good practice to not shift-er, into drive till everything is at operating temperature. Taking off with a cold motor does more damage. Plus, you are giving OLE BETSY, tome to get her ducks in a row before she carrys you to point A and B, and, so forth.

I have no experience with a tune. My only guess it you get the higher, "warm up" rpm's because of this. Take the 15-20 seconds to enjoy the good roast from the coffee beans and have a great day!

Sounds normal to me. Fast idle on cold start helps light the converters off faster, and helps in getting the PCM into closed loop faster.
