Got my first Check Engine!

Sounds weird to be "excited" by it, but I'm glad that I got something. Basically I was having trouble with idling in colder temps, truck would surge at a stop, tach would go up and down like crazy, sometimes the truck would even die. I replaced the IAC, thinking that it was casuing the problem. The truck has 120k miles and everything is still original. While it made it idle a little bit better the surging was still there, just not as bad. So this morning I finally got the light and pulled the codes with the Edge. P0171 & P0174 Bank 1 & 2 lean. I plan on stopping by Autozone on the way home, getting some MAF cleaner, sparkplugs (as I had planned on changing those out anyway with my new COP's). I'll also check the PCV valve to see if it sounds like a paint can and check the vacuum lines , especially that elbow behind the TB. Is there anything else I should check/replace? I did quite a bit of searching and found these to be the most common fixes, just want to know what else I should be searching for. Is there a diagram out there somewhere that shows where ALL the vacuum lines are so I could check those as well? I've never had the TB off, but have read that it could be a gasket problem, is that common, or rare cases? Thanks for any help and I'll let you guys know what I find!

Sounds like your on the right path with checking behind the TB for the vacuum leak and cleaning your MAF. I had the same codes and once I cleaned my MAF, problem solved.

Good luck!

Good Deal !! You searched it out .. Yea , you right on the mark and have the right idea.

The 170 series lean codes can be from a leaky manifold gasket - it's easy to test with a bottle of propane while she's running.. But no , not a common problem..

Take a pic of your vac line harness before you disconnect or post back - I know where they go. I have some pics as well. You prolly won't need them tho once you get into it..

Did you clean your throttle body yet ? Nothing to do with codes , it's just a good thing to do..

No, haven't cleaned it yet, I was waiting until I got into changing the plugs and COP's, was basically going to do everything at once, make a whole day out of it. Right now, I just want to get back to reliability of it running then I will work on making it better!

You know what plugs to get and where to get your COP's?

What motor do you have?

Got the COP's from Global already, going to get some Motocrafts SP479 from Autozone if they have enough in stock. Truck has the 5.4. Oh and I already remembered to grab the dielectric for the boots....

Jbrew, going to do the TB this weekend, which gaskets do I need, just the main gasket between the TB and intake manifold?

How long did it take for the Cops to arrive after you had ordered them?

Thanks

I ordered them on a Thursday and I got them on a monday/tuesday. Don't quite remember, I think it said 3-4 days shipping. They come USPS. Still relatively quick and they gave me a tracking number.

Yea , that one and the TB to elbow gasket , also the EGR to TB elbow gasket and you might want to get some RTV silicon sealer . I use the permatex high heat black and use a very thin layer on the parts .. That's up to you- I also go around the seams with it.

Good Luck
