Replacing an IAC on a 5.4

Here's a little photo show of how I replaced my IAC in under 15 minutes(that time included one !)

First I went to Autozone and bought the new IAC for $53, dealer wanted $109. Side by side they look pretty darn similar to me

Got home, diconnected the battery and let the engine cool down a little

There are two bolts to remove, 8mm socket...no problem. You can see the two ports where the IAC mates up to the throttle body. The yellow connector behind it is the plug for the IAC, a very simple snap conector. Not much slack on it so you have to squeeze in there to get it off.

..paused for beer break to take pictures of dirty and clean one.
Dirty (120k miles to be exact)

Finally, plug the new IAC in, replace the gasket with newly supplied one and attach new IAC assembly.

Things are a little tight back there so take your time and don't drop the screws into never-never land.....
Reconnect the battery
Total time: under 15 minutes

Questions?

Idle Air Control valve

The truck will usually not idle unless you keep your foot on the gas when it goes bad

I bought several like 3 IACs online for like $15 bucks a pop and they are Motorcraft. I fogot what site. Do a search and you can probably find it. I found the site from the posts here. Have stock piled problem parts like IACs, Coils, and fuel filters. The coils are from Global Automotive on ebay.

I think its better if you take the time to take off the throttle body and clean it. My 99 F-150 when I replace My IAC I remove the throttle body and cleaned it and it made a positive difference in how it ran. My IAC was not bad I was having a problem with a new COP (Motoblue crap). Cleaning the throttle body is a maintenance thing so I would alway do it that way. If you let it go you trucks performance suffers.

I'll get to that point when I replace the plugs and coils. My problem was driving home last night the truck would idle so bad that it started surging. I already have the COP's from Global, just need to get plugs. I plan on taking down most of the workings on top of the motor, so I'll clean the TB at that time. Just figured that I had a spare hour to work on the truck, and I know there are questions about the IAC, just figured a little photo show would help out. I'll try to remember to take pictures when I do the coils as well.

Oh and so far, no idle problems. Ran like a champ all the way to work today!

Awesome. I am going to do that today. I changed the plugs on my 5.4 3v and have been experiencing just the idle problem. (pics from my plug change here: https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=310734)

I'm going to do the IAC change, and will post if that fixed it!

Thanks!

Nice write up... I wish Rockpick would combine all of these DYI threads into one place... Heck, I might do it as links in one post and have RP sticky it. Be a lot of searching, but it would make things easier for people trying to fix simple engine mechanics.

That's what I figured, I've spent enough time searching, I just figured I would start documenting. Baiscally giving back what I learned so someone else can see what to do.

We should definitely put something together - I might be able to clean up my albums this way - I have over 400 pics of just fix it stuff

I'll help you in any way I can and I'm sure others would as well..

We would be the "Go To" on the "How To's" if we could organize it ... Maybe throw all are loose change in Rockpick's can lol..
