The base model 2008 weighs in at ~4500 w/the V6 vs. 3990 for the '03. The '08 5.4 base model is about 4700 and the '03 is about 4100. You could get the V6 but I couldn't imagine why. The 4.6 is a rockin' little engine and the 5.4 is great too. I don't remember anyone complaining about too much power ever. Good luck w/whatever you choose.

I don't know about you but 2000 in the bed is way over the limit reguardless of which motor.

I'm not putting down the 5.0, I'm saying that the 4.2 is just as ballsy, even with an automatic. For what he wants to do and with his budget, a V6 *WILL* do the job quite well in a short bed standard cab XL and will probably run forever. He can also change his spark plugs in 15 minutes without taking half the top of the engine off to get at them.

To the OP. Have you ever heard any one say they had too much motor/power in their truck or car???? They all get crappy MPG.

I second the person who said to go for a test drive. I drove a 4.6L for eight
years and later bought a 2007 auto. V-6 longbed. The V-6 works great for
me.

I think the people who are pushing the 5.4 for this use have a testosterone issue.
