I'd fill it up with 87 before you take it in - get the octane as low as you can to see if the pings come back and get that fixed.

Problem is that I only have a 1/2 tank of 93... I don't think if I put in 87 it would come back...

I'm in a sticky situation and I've only got a few hours to react and the roads are bad so I can't go on an excursion to burn off the gas... hmmmm....

Is there a way for them to directly hook up gas to the engine from a small tank or something to administer tests?

Dang it.. and Saturday was a nice day to go out for a long, extended drive...

On a second note... I know of a gas station locally that sells really cheap 86 octane... would that help if I put that in?

Well, I filled it up this morning with 86 octane... started driving it around and everything... drove it like a bat out of hell... thank goodness the roads were clear.

I took it out on the highway and drove it normal for about 50 miles. No pinging. So... I kept driving and driving. I put about 100 miles on that tank averaging 20.8 mpg, which went up from a blistering 18.2 I was getting on the 93 octane.

I brought it over to the new service center, and they hooked it up to the computer and ran some tests right in front of me. They did all sorts of things like rev it, let it idle for 20 minutes, then rev it at about 2,500 rpms for about 10 minutes, all while on the computer. They also put the engine under load using the clutch and such.

So what were the results? Nothing... they could not find a blessed thing wrong.

But here's the scary part... that 86 octane is still not making my truck ping.

Which I guess is a good thing, eh?

So... what I am thinking it has to be is that the gas in Utica and New Hartford New York is just BAD gas. So if any of you guys happen to be in this area, stay the frig away from the gas stations... I don't care what type engine you have.

Currently I've been getting between 21.8 to 22.1 mpg... and the truck is running flawlessly.

This truck drives REALLY nice again... so I have no clue. :o

I'll keep you guys updated if there is any more pinging due to gas stations.

But I'm really happy now that my truck is back to normal.

Here is a picture of the gas mileage:

Just as an update, there has been no pinging and the power has been more than excellent. Gas mileage has dropped to about 21.2 mpg, but that's because of the snow/ice issues of driving slow in a higher gear.

Thanks for everyone's help, and I hope it stays away for good. I especially thank glc for all of your kind and knowledgeable assistance.

My vote's on Utica gas as well.

I filled up there once with 93 - had to drop in the 'bad gas' tune just to keep it from pinging.

This is from the Citgo on the main drag just up from the interstate exit.

Never again - what a dump, anyway.....

I dunno what they heck they put in the city gas pumps... but whatever it is, it makes my truck run like poop.

It's funny because you'd think that country gas stations would be the worst quality because it just sits around... wrong... in my case it's the best.

Go figure, right?

I'm just happy that there was not a major issue with my truck.

I always like to stay up on top of things when it's my daily driver...

Well, they have like 10 gas stations... they have GOOD gas and it is VERY cheap on Tuesdays because they take $.10 off...

If I could have waited, I would have gotten the gas today for less... but I had to make sure to try to make my truck blow up from pinging. But it sadly it didn't work, because their gas is like the worlds best for the 4.2l v6...

Ah.... good to know. I'll keep them in mind next time I pass through to/from Maine. They have 93 octane?

Thanks!

Yes. They have 86, 87, 89, and 93 at their pumps.

I'll take a picture of a station next time I need a fillup.. but at 22 mpg, I won't be there for a few weeks...
