It's getting a little harder... and I notice that I tend to have to stay out of 5th unless I go beyond 55 mph.... so I've adjusted my shifting habits accordingly:

1st: 0-10
2nd: 10-25
3rd: 25-45
4th: 45-55
5th: 55+

I used to be able to do this, even with the pinging:

1st: 0-10
2nd: 10-20
3rd: 20-30
4th: 30-40
5th: 40+

Also, the soot problem is getting worse and I notice when I drive, I'll get a puff of black smoke when I get into the 2,500 rpm range.

The sulphur odor is getting so bad, that I can smell it in my truck when I stop at a traffic light or a stop sign.

What is going on with my truck?!

I know it's running rich... but sheesh... lol

I am hoping for a CEL today... make the ECU do something for me... not to mention my scan gauge.

I have also noticed the same smell but only if i go WOT for more than a short burst like if i was to go from 60-100 mph at WOT. I have been wondering what was the cause myself and everyone here says rich mixture, bad gas, or cats going bad.

It goes full rich at WOT by design.

How about a quick stop at Autozone, etc for a code read, it must be showing something by now.

I already have a scanner... and it even states that all emissions systems are ready.

I got back home, and my mpg went from 17.1 mpg to 18.2 mpg.

I don't know what the heck is going on... this engine is nutty.

I also noted some stats: (I forgot to get cold...)

Ignition timing:
Hot (Warmed up) :
Idle: 16-18
Accelerating: 26-34
Cruising with foot off the pedal doing 40 mph: 13-18

Average water temp: 188-202 degrees F
Cylinder Head Temp: 189-203 degrees F
Throttle Position Sensor at idle: 14
Idle RPM: 752-786
Intake Air Temp: 37 degrees F (proved correct on my outdoor temp on my house)

Manifold Air Pressure:
Idle: 3.5-4.5 PSI
Accelerating: 9.2-13.9 PSI
Crusing: 3.2-4.7 PSI
Max MAP: 14.5 PSI (when the truck is WOT at 3,000 rpms)

I'm going to add some more variables into my ScanGaugeII to find out what could be the culprit...

All of this data is derived using premium 93 octane gas.

Well, I decided to do some preliminary analysis on the engine this morning... I checked:

Air Filter: Looks Ok
Oil: Looks brand new and no loss
Coolant: No loss because I put a line on the coolant bottle with a sharpie when I bought it.
Battery checked out at 12.2 volts

Checked the EGR, and throttle body for any problems... nothing out of the unusual...

*Sigh*.. I don't know what the problem is.

Document *everything* in detail for your next trip to a dealer, and ask them to get a factory rep involved if they can't figure it out. If you come in with all your ducks in a row and a good attitude, you have the best chance for a resolution once and for all.

I think your attitude is fine anyway - I've been following your threads and there are a lot of people here who would simply call the truck a POS and give the dealer a really hard time by now. A clue to those kinds of people - I wouldn't blame a dealer for telling you to buzz off if you came in like that - if I were a service advisor I'd do exactly that. Treat people how you would want to be treated, and only @$$holes will give you a hard time.

I'd consider asking them to borescope the engine to make sure all that pinging hasn't already done some damage. If you play your cards right you may be able to get a replacement engine out of this whole fiasco.

I am documenting everything, right down to the times and dates of the data.

Yeah, there's no reason to get ticked off... I learned that it don't get anywhere to get mad or ticked off when people are ignorant. People will just ignore me if I got mad like that.

I even told the dealer where I am bringing it on Monday, Dec 3, that you can have it all day if you need to. I don't have a problem with it. And I was really nice about all of it. I told them my issues and everything, and I communicated in a respectful fashion. But there's not a reason in the world be mad or disrespectful.

However, I do want my truck fixed, eventually. :o

That sounds like a good idea about the boroscope... who knows, they might find out what is the cause.

Treating a service advisor with respect and working WITH them got me a very satisfactory off-warranty resolution to an issue I recently had. Brought the truck in with a hard miss. New plugs and wires and a BG job appeared to fix it, but the miss kept coming back. To make a long story short, after a few trips back at no additional charge, they finally swapped out the coil pack with a used one off the bench, it fixed it for good (so far, anyway), and they did NOT charge me for it or the labor to replace it.

glc... I've got a question...

Do you know if it will matter what type of gas is in the truck when I bring it in tomorrow? Or will they still be able to diagnose if something is wrong no matter what type of fuel is in it?
