4.6 swapped to 5.4

ok i have been doing some reading and it seems to be an easy swap.

the thing i want to know is will i need to get a new wiring harness or computer? thats the only thing that isn't really clear on the swap. the 5.4 will bolt directly to my 4R70W tranny i believe. i am just in need of a motor and no 4.6R's are to be found around here.

thanks for any info

kyle

I am not too sure about the swap, BUT, I would almost guarantee that a new harness and PCM would be a must.

I will be doing the swap when my 4.6 lays down on me. So, I am looking forward to all advise for this as well!

I have looked at the 418 stroker as well, but, I know I will have to do many mods to get it in. BUT, OH WHATTA BEAUTE!!!!

Here's the link,http://www.proformanceunlimited.com/...6_450carb.html

Be sure to watch the VID!!!

Also, here is a link I found today on here for a MOD 4.6! http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/ found the link on this site!

Better than ****, IMO!!! LMAO!

well looks like i can use the existing harness and computer. i grabbed this info from modulardepot.com. seems you just need to extend two wires and a slight exhaust mod. says might want to chip it to but any idea what chip?

The motor mounts on both engines are the same. Your 99 4.6 has coil pack and the 99 5.4 has COP ignition. Use the fuel rail that came from the 5.4. If you use the engine harness from the 4.6, easiest way to go, you will need to extend the oil sending unit wire and the IAC harness. The IAC on the 5.4 is at the rear and the harness comes out at the rear. On the 4.6 it comes around to the front and it is not long enough to reach back. You could strip the harness and pull it back to the rear but I found it easier to extend the two wires. Your engine will run using the coil packs so the driver side will need to have a bracket fabbed up to hold it in place. A few nice things about the swap is the serpentine belts are the same and they both can use the same spark plugs. If the 5.4 doesn't have a flex plate you may need to get one if your truckj had the Romeo 4.6. The Windsor engines have 8 bolt cranks. The Romeo has 6. And a smentionned you will need a chip to handle the extra displacement. Your exhaust will not match up so you will need to see a mufflar shop to connect the manifolds to the exhaust pipes. If I can think of anything else i will post it.

This sounds great. I was thinking the swap was alot of headache. I will probably consider the 5.4 when I have to build instead of my 4.6. Bigger motor, gotta mean more HP.

yea more of the numbers that count torque! but needless to say i just bought another 4.6 Romeo. I found one out of a 2001 police interceptor with 21,000 miles for 500.00 I couldn't pass that up. So look out I got a 5.0 motor :P

This is an easy swap.it's what i have done. The coil bracket needs to be ,ade for the passenger side. i did not have to extend any wires. used the coil packs from the 4.6w and had Troyer send me an xcal2 with tunes. need new sections added to the down pipes.my 4.6 had 8 rib accesories so i swapped the 5.4 over to 8rib.lots more torque.check out my gallery for pix

Just do a compression and a leak down test if results are good your good to go but if your like me do it your self-er its easier to just put it in and let it eat
