4.6l..........impressive
4.6l..........impressive
Sorry, new to the forum and doing a little venting.
I bought an '06 F-150 crew-cab longbed late last year and just want to crow a bit. Ford was running the O% and even though I was not a Ford driver the offer was hard resist and I wound-up getting far more vehicle than I usually look to buy. When the salesman gave me the numbers I bought on the spot without test driving it and having only given it a cursory glance on the lot even though I was a little worried from previous experiences with small V-8s.
Well, then time came to drive it home........and it has blown me away. To be a 5600lb vehicle, the "little" 4.6l does a very nice job of getting around. I have had small V-8s in the past.....Ford 302.....Dodge 4.7l......and neither were all that impressive. Both "okay" but not world beaters.
But, and I've sincerely got to say, the 4.6l has not disappointed. Would I buy it wanting to pull a 25' camper to Colorado each summer? No. Would I buy it wanting to pull the boat or the camper or the tractor out to the lake a few times a year? Yes, no problem.
I've had Ford, Chevy, and Dodge of many different ilks........but this pickup has impressed me the most.

i love my 4.6, i've put down a 1/4 mile of 15.92@89.6mph w/ .754 reaction...
then again. those 4.30 gears are fking awsome... not the best, but for a 4.6 its not bad...
by the way, the exhaust in my sig. isnt installed yet, right now its just the factory exhaust with a glasspack instead of the stock muffler

It's just an XLT (anyone remember the days before Eddie Bauer and King Ranch when XLT was the top of the line?) white mono exterior, grey interior. Power everything with 6 disc CD.
I had an '04 Dodge Hemi before it and it disappointed me more than this one. The Hemi didn't have the guts of my prior '00 Dodge 360 or my preceding '90 Chevy with a 350. Somewhere in-betwixt I had an '03 Dodge with the 4.7l that never did very much at all.
Up-and-up, this 4.6l in this pickup has done more to impress me than any motor I've had since the Chevy 350. It has some revs when you need them and is easy on the gas when you need it to be. We took a quick trip this summer to N.M. and it got us around 18 mpg on average while doing the newly allowed 80mph on state/interstate highways to and from.
Great little motor. Not a Cummins or Powerstroke obviously, but very good in it's own way.....

I've never driven a 6-cylinder pickup. A good friend bought a '96 base F-250 with the old 4.9 and still drives it today pulling goosenecks and the like but it isn't the best set-up.
I don't know what Ford did but this little V-8 is all right. The '02 Dodge with 4.7l did no better and maybe even worse even being nearly 1000lbs lighter. The 1988 302 was an enigma........put out great numbers but did little on the highway although sounding and testing great.
The difference between the 4.2 and 4.6 is small in cost.....but sizeable in umph.
