IMRC Help
As some of you might have read from this thread: https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=306329 ... I have been dealing with a pinging issue under acceleration.
A few notes:
- Happens ONLY when the engine goes through the closed loop mode... when the engine is fully warmed up.
- Happens at all RPMs.
- When cruising, there is slight pinging.
- When accelerating from a stop, there is a heavy amount of pinging each time I shift and reapply the gas.
- Brought it into a Ford Service Center and they did all sorts of tests and didn't find anything wrong.
So I am wondering if it is the IMRC with that TSB that is out? Or is there any other TSBs in relation to this?
If I do need to check the IMRC, what is the best way to do it? I know I will have to take the upper intake manifold off... or is there an easier way to check it?
If I do have to take the upper intake manifold off, how do I do it? Does anyone have any suggestions? Or can someone email me some diagrams?
I really want to get my truck fixed... like ASAP so it doesn't blow up on me. As I was going up a hill tonight, and it is just getting worse... it now sounds like real diesel engine going up hills.

I just read the other thread - and my advice to you till you can get this properly resolved is use full premium gas - highest octane you can get. You are risking permanent engine damage if you don't.
Go back to the first dealer, talk to the service manager again, show him the receipt, and tell him you are not happy with the service you received. The advisor you talked to is not on the same page here.
Driving it harder is BS - there should not be any deposits in there with less than 10k on it unless you have been using 3rd world gas.
My 03 is just like yours - and I have yet to hear ONE SINGLE ping under ANY conditions, even when I grabbed 3rd instead of 1st at a stop sign and pulled away.
Do not take it apart yourself - your warranty will be at risk.

My Dad told me if they don't fix it after 4 times, he will have it Lemon Lawed and either they replace the truck or give a full refund.
We agreed that we don't want another Ford with issues. Nip it in the bud before Ford gets us.
I'm going back to the service center again today... it is insane that my '07 with 9k on it sounds like a diesel.

I agree to go back to that dealer. You don't have to be angry or anyhting. Just sincerly and politely tell them you're not satisfied with it. I wouldn't tell them you called Ford. There's nothing wrong with doing so, but it might only accomplish putting a bad taste in their mouth. IMO calling Ford accomplishes nothing. When they call me I tell them the same thing I tell the customer. (but it's easy because Im not full of sh*t)
And it's 3 times for the same concern with no resolution. Just bought back a guys Mustang because it wouldn't take fuel
I will add***
I've seen peeps, and not necessarily this is your situation, shift thier trucks insanely early. I realize not everyone drives like I drive my Stang (w.f.o) but they were REALLY bogging it down. And of course they think they are driving it correctly.

But I do raise the B.S. flag on driving it harder... that is a lame excuse. This is NOT a car... it's a truck. It's meant for low speed operation... but on contrary, my Dakota, that I've put 108k on NEVER gave me a problem since I drive it the same way I drive my F150 and I don't see it pinging.... So it's a fallacy in my book. Heck, my Dad has a new '07 Jeep Compass with th i4 and he drives it under 2,000 rpms most of the time, and that thing is supposed to be a high revving engine... 10k on it and NO problems!
I'm certainly not saying rev the **** out of it. And I have only been in one manual F-150 so I have little experience there. But basing it on what I know from my 5.4 auto, a shift under 2k is pretty low, especially when you get up to 5th gear and going slow.
And certianly not saying that's what you're doing.. Just poking the coals..
But it is a poor reference point to use two non-like vehicles. If Steete has another 5-sped on the lot, Ask them to let you test drive it. I wouldn't think they have a problem with it. And I would politely ask them if they contacted hotline, which should have been done. To see if there is any like vehicles or a possible known concern. I did look up that tsb and the sypmtom sound slike what you're describing. didn't look like they did anything wrong, but maybe they could have tried a little harder. Especially since the SM seemd to notice it so well.

Sprouts, I can lug the **** out of my 5 speed V6 without a shudder or peep. You can literally drive it like a manual transmission diesel. I can putt around town all day at 30 mph in 5th, which I think is under 1000 rpm (no tach to confirm). I do not worry about carboning it up, I do get out on the Interstate enough to keep it cleaned out. When I'm on city streets with 4 way stops every few blocks, I use 2nd and 4th because I'm lazy. I start in 2nd and shift to 4th at 20 mph.
Manual has an issue here, something is DEFINITELY not right. Mine didn't even ping on 85 octane mountain gas when I went through Colorado last spring.

Well I went in this afternoon, about 2 hours ago and the Service Manager gave me this... I think it is BG44K? Correct me if I'm wrong... but I've heard of BG products before on here. But he just gave it to me and told me to add it to a 1/2 empty tank of gas. So I went out and I dumped it in and I told him I put it in. He said it is what Ford uses on their Tuneups of 100k.
So... any difference?! Well... I drove it around... and drove it some more... about an hour and a half.... well.... let you me tell you something... it is WORSE than before!!!!
Talk about beating a dead engine... whew, that thing sounds like a 7.3l diesel going up a hill at 3,000 rpms, less the turbocharger... When cruising, it's popping and pinging. It sounds like the cat under my seat is popping after I get off the gas going up a hill, too.
Right now I've got a 1/4 of a tank left and that solution they added to my truck will sit in the tank over night... but I am doubtful that it will cure my problem.
It's WEIRD.
Here's that BG stuff: (sorry about the nasty pics)

Oh, and by the way... that stuff they gave me REEKS! I got it on my hands, and I almost puked...

Anyone have thoughts on if an octane booster would help him? Or does it not increase it enough to make a difference?
Early for a fuel filter under normal circumstances, but maybe he picked up some garbage thats causing or adding to the prob. As cheap/easy as they are it cant hurt.
Feel for ya, havin trouble the way you are so early

BG products are very good quality products! Not a bad a idea for a try, but while there are some octane enhancers I would just return the truck to the dealer for further diagnostics and repair.
I agree.
Politely refuse to accept that's the way it is if you really feel so. They can't not fix it if there's a genuine problem. If after some friendly persistance they still don't help, call Ford. like I said above, they have 3 chances to fix the same issue.
