Synthetic Oil?
Synthetic Oil?
Hey fellas
I have a 2000 f-150 w/ the 4.6 and almost 100K on the ticker. I am thinking about switching to synthetic oil (prolly Mobile 1) and am curious as if I have waited too long to switch. I have heard that synthetic cleans the engine and that any sludge build-up will be cleaned and this might cause a leak to form. Is this true or a bunch of crap?
Thanks,
Ed

100K, questionable to change
I don't think I'd change to syn after that many miles, even though you certainly can. The commonly dismissed or discounted benefits of synthetic oil most likely wouldn't be realized with a high mileage motor. IMO, if switching to a synthetic, the best benefits are realized throughout the life of the motor, i.e., change to syn at first oil change, or roughly b/w 3 and 5K miles.
Synthetic oil can clean a tarnished motor and induce leaks.
Mobil 1 is a good oil, but the numerous lab reports show that Penzoil Platinum is a better synthetic oil, and is less costly, if you are looking at the various Group III based synthetic oils.
Mobil 1, according to various reputable sources, used to be a better oil than it currently is, and Shell/Pennzoil produces a better product with a better additive package.
