TwinCharger

Volkswagen and Audi are introducing the twin charger cars, a line of vehicles that feature a super efficient 1.4L Diesel that use a low boost Supercharger in the low range and a turbo in the upper range. Performance is quite surprising for the little golf

2nd i have an insane idea for an engine with alot of HP...Twin turbo with a twin screw super charger ...ya i know thats be alot of boost and itd sound like a freaking jet taking off but...could it be done?
If you check next months Hot Rod mag, in there they have a pic from the 1940/50's of an engine with 4 turbo's installed in succession on a diesel producing like 100 psi

the 8v92ta is a V8 that puts 92 cu in of air into each cylinder on each compression stroke. It has a turbo mounted directly on top of a Blower, with a aftercooler in the valley between the cylinder banks. It is used in a LVS which is a vehicle I worked on in the Marine Corp. The thing would run with no fuel in it. It redlines about 2200 rpm though being a deisel and all. I never saw it but it is said it can run backwards too.

Why? The Windsor isn't near the motor the Cleveland is, especially back in the 70's. only since aluminum heads have become cheap has the Windsor been able to reach performance levels of iron headed Cleveland's. they've done sick stuff with the Cleveland down there in Australia. The EPA killed the Cleveland here so they shipped it down there.

Before they made the 92 series, there was the 71 series. 71 cubic in. per cylinder. Available in trucks as 6, 8 or 12 cylinders. As it was a two stroke engine, it required a mechanical blower or supercharger to operate. This blower did not produce any significant amount of boost, it merely purged the cylinders of spent fuel and air as there is no exhaust stroke on a two cycle engine.

In the early 70's, they added a turbo to the 8 cylinder version of this engine, producing 350 HP. Yes, I was foolish enough to buy one! Big mistake!

Soon after, they released the 92 series, 430 HP. They had massive problems at first, but eventually got the bugs out of that engine.

Then, Penske bought Detroit Engines, scrapped the old "Two Stroke Jokes" and is now producing a 4 stroke engine that is pretty good.

So, yes, you can have a turbo feeding a mechanical blower! But! You better have the bottom end of a diesel! The pressures would be enormous! It would also be wasteful as with a turbo, a mechanical blower is not needed. You can get much more boost from a turbo than you can from a blower.

Oh! And yes, Jughed, those old 2 strokes can run backwards. For little while. The oil pump turning backwards does not make much oil pressure so the engine won't last long! And no, they won't run without fuel!!

I had one run away on me once after rebuild, had to throw my clipboard on the intake to get it to shut down. Thought the backwards thing was a myth, thnx bro.

That's why they all had a little trip flapper on the intake! As there were no electronics, they needed no power to keep going once started. The normal shut down was by cable, overriding the idle setting and allowing it to stop. When (notice I didn't say IF) it failed, you could pull the emergency shut off, which did essentially what you did. Once set though, you had to tilt the cab to get access to reset it.

Of course, nobody ever tripped the flapper when the truck was shut off and watched as the next driver tried, and tried, and tried to get it to start!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
