P0455 Code

SES light came on tonight, took it to Autozone and the P0455 code came on. Gross evap. leak. I'll dive into it this weekend. I haven't filled up in over a week. I did take the cap off and put it back on. It was on correctly. After doing a search my other ideas are:

1. Worn out O-ring on gas cap. How much does a new one cost?
2. Cracked filler neck or overflow neck.
3. Stuck vapor managment valve. How do I unstick it?
4. What is the round thing behind the master cylnder

Anyone else have any other suggestions.

Another thought to throw in. I have had kind of a rough idle for several years now. Almost a year and a half ago while it was in for a pinion seal, the dealership told me it was missing. They did a diagnogstic and told me that my PVC valve assembly tube (or whatever the whole thing is called) was cracked. They replaced the plastic tube, the valve and some other rubber hoses. I couldn't tell much difference as it still was idling rough. I'm wondering if I have a vaccum leak somewhere that has finally gotten bad enough to cause an evap system leak as well?

Check your over -flow hose underneath the filler neck to the tank for holes or cracks.

If its not the overflow(you had that listed , didn't catch that at first) - Here's the deal -

First , the problem is listed in this - Data sheet (HX45)-

It's your EVAP canister vent valve.. = #9 in the illustration below -

It's above the rear axle.

Here's watcha do to confirm and by-pass for now. -

Disconnect the battery (both terminals) - reach up behind #9 and grab that vent hose that plugs behind. Twist a 1/4 turn and disconnect the vent and hose from the valve and just tie it up for now . The other end of that hose goes nowhere - its set up like a breather is and routs to an empty box sitting on the tank - so nothing to worry about there..

After you have disconnected the vent tube - re-connect the battery and fire it up. The code will not come back and you will have bypassed the vent valve until you get a new one.

This doesn't hurt anything and you can fix at your leisure. However - Emissions will not pass until it is fixed because the conditions needed for the EVAP system to run cannot be met until this is achieved..

The EVAP has nothing to do with your idle problem. I suggest moving the your wiring harness further away from your AC accumulator , Suck Test the EGR , Clean the TB. If that doesn't cure the idle issue , than I suggest replacing the IAC.

Another Pic - This is the hose you need to disconnect -

Well jbrew I found the problem. Looks like this vaccum hose melted in two. It comes out of the bottom of the vapor management valve. It's a hard plastic line around 1/4" OD.

I went to the Ford house, but the parts guy couldn't figure out which tube it was and he didn't have anything in stock. So now I have to figure out what the part number is so I can order it. Do you have any more diagrams of the vapor management valve? I'll try to post the diagram he gave me.

That's because it's your vacuum line harness - It comes as a complete harness - you can't just order the white 1/8 " line . They have vac line repair kits @ auto zone for like 6 bucks.

OR - You could pay the price and get a new harness from Ford.

If you get a kit - get the one with assorted rubber boots and adapters - theres a couple ways to fix depending on the kit you choose. You can just purchase the rubber type vac hose , they sell that as-well - it slides over both ends.

OK I need more information. I only have one half of the white tube now (the parts guy kept the other half). What part do I need to order from Ford, or what do I need to get at autozone? I'll need a way to attach the hose to the rubber elbow and the other rubber female connector.

Get that piece back - the guy didn't know what that was ?

What an idiot (pardon me) ..

Get the piece back and splice like I described above .

You want a pick of the whole harness? or how to spice it?

I could go out in the shop and show you what a rubber vac hose looks like - and one slid onto a line like yours . You want a pic of a kit . what exactly don't you understand about it ?

Yea I see the other end connected in the pic - can't you get that back or don't you want to?

Dude why do you have webcam pictures of nasty morbidly obese chicks? That's just wrong.

Anyways what I probably should have typed is "how do I know what harness to get (i.e. part #, etc.)"? But it doesn't matter now.

I've not done a lot of work on vaccum lines. I didn't know they sold so many vaccum hose connectors or kits. I found some connecters that were close enough is size and bought a couple feet of 5/32" hose. I put the hose on, took the positive terminal off for a while, and then started it back up. No SES light, at least for now. I'm fairly confident that was the problem though.

Thanks for the help jbrew.
