Tic Tic Tic
Just bought my first Ford F150. While at idle it has a faint tic. Last Chevy I had made a similar sound but it was the ABS and was normal noise. Do I have a problem?
it is an 04 so i am guessing it is the cam phaser. i have heard both "it has to be replaced", and that it "isn't necessary to be replaced". it actually does it on mine also a little annoying, but nothing wrong.
what part of ky you from?

The tic is noticable fron both banks but is louder on the passenger side. Runs smooth on cold startup. After good warmup it is almost past a tic to a faint knock. Fluids are all OK. Oil is real clean. Bought from the dealer AS IS so I dont know if they will do anything. But they had to know something because they serviced it. Where is this cam phaser? Have to be replaced by a dealer?

i would take it by the dealer and have them listen to it and they should be able to tell you if that is for sure it and a price.
I have the same tic in my truck. It's annoying but, I haven't had any problems.
There is a TSB.

Stealership says $222.00 parts and $1100.00 labor for both banks. 7 hrs. for passenger side alone. Searched for cam phaser here and most all that has had it done were out in 2 or 3 hrs. First these guys sell me a truck they say has had complete service done and has no problems. Then hit me with this crap about 1300.00 to fix it. They had to know the problem was there already. Gonna call 2morrow and see what the cat says that sold it to me.

Can live with the ticking if it does no harm. But the passenger side is pretty loud and leaning more toward a knock than a tic.
Here's a picture of how the cam phasers are sitting in the engine. They are the item on the end of the camshaft. The pic is on pg 7 of this pdf article. Cam phasers are not a good piece of engineering in my book. While they don't present any major issues with an engine that is properly maintained, there can be catastophic failures in engines that have not seen the best maintenance.

Working at a Ford dealership here in canada , i have done MANY cam phasers , it is a fairly difficult job to do , and it does require a specialty tool , myself i can do it in about 2 hours for the passenger side and 1 hour for the diver side , to do the pasenger side tho you need to remove the a/c line from the accumulator . as for damage to the engine , yes it can cause damage , it starts off as a noise , but furthe down the road it can break the small roll pins inside the phaser which hold it together , causeing a missfire and possible engine damage , if it is only knocking now the only detramental effect is decreased fuel milage due to the phaser not advancing the cam timing.

how much would you say it would cost to do?
also would you say it is a factory only replacement?
The job only pays differently for different applications in some app's you have to replace all the cam followers as well , it can vary from 2.8 hrs all the way to 7.5 hrs for both sides and all the followers. and as for it being factory only , i have not seen any aftermarket company making such a part yet , you cannot just walk into a dealership and order this part as well as it is not listed in any parts catalgues , the part number is only attainable if you have the TSB which includes a part number . also if you do not have the specialty tool to replaced the cam phaser in vehicle , you will have to remove the front cover a re-time the entire engine , with the specialty tool you do not even have to take the cam off the engine , makes the job ALOT easier
