This is why I'm so ticked after payin 21 grand for a truck this salesman says went thru service dept and was in A 1 shape. I have been told to bring it in and they'll check it out and go from there as to if they'll fix it or not. I'm thinkin not but gonna wait and give the benefit of doubt. If Ford thinks I'm gonna listen to a knocking engine for the next 5 years they got another thing coming. I like the truck but not that much. I have a 76 150 thats still goin strong and a 65 Mustang in the garage both with good ole reliable straight six engines that just about anybody could work on.

Why did you buy it if it was ticking?

I tried this truck out on a very chilly day. The knock doesnt show up till the engine is at operating temp and gets louder on hot days. I raised the hood on startup and the noise wasnt there. When we pulled back on the lot I parked the truck and made the deal. If it hadnt been for this forum I wouldnt have known a thing about this issue. Thanks to whomever put up this site.

Update

Took to the dealer and they agreed the cam phaser was bad. Made me a sweet deal on an 07 XLT so the 04 is some other poor souls problem. Hope he checks out this site before they buy it.

So, is there a recall on this problem or not? Mine started tcking last week and they said they believe this is the problem with mine, but mine is out of warranty and I will have to pay out of pocket.

No recall. The dealer wanted big bucks to repair mine. The 07 I just bought is quiet as a mouse. Dont notice any difference in power. Just an embarassing noise.

The TSB states 2005 vehicles. Was there a design change to the cam phasers after 2005? My F150 seems to have the same problem and I just was wondering if the update will fix the noise permanently.

Only time wil tell if its fixed forever. Ive changed tons of them at the dealer I work at as well. I usually take the timing cover off and replace the tensioner arms as well since at 50K they seem to be worn half way through. It adds cost to the repair whether its retail or warranty but the job is done right and once. The special tool we have is a plastic wedge on a steel rod that you jam down in the timing chain to hold it in place while you slip the cam gear off and replace it. I dont like the tool plus like I said the tensioner arms are always worn out on the ones Ive done. The 04's are the ones with the most problems, Ive done them on a few 05's too though. The mustangs so far have been immune to the problem, at least in my neck of the woods. I too would suggest anyone with the phaser problem get them changed. I have one on the lot that was ignored being a leased truck and the cam gear finally broke off the end of the cam when it cam apart, bent valves and a bunch of other chewed up parts means a new engine for this guy.

is this an issue only on the 4.6 engine or is it on the 5.4?

im considering buying a used Expedition, maybe an 2005 or 2006 model. Is this an issue I should be concerned with in a 5.4 of those model years im looking at? Is the 5.4 any good?

before you get all nutty checking cam phasers, take a good hard look at your ac compressor pulley. when i bought my truck it was making a "noise" that many mechanics passed off as "valvetrain clatter" over a short time (bout a month) it got real loud. replacing it completely eliminated the noise. the noise it was making also sounded like it was kind of comming from both sides of the engine.

I'd like to have something cleared up. I have an '08 that makes the slight tic, did it since brand new, 0 miles. I know 4 other people in my area with newer ('06+) F150's who all have the same ticking sound. I've been to 3 seperate dealers. My friends have also been to dealers with their trucks. All have had the same response. The slight constant ticking sound is in fact the fuel injectors, NOT the cam phasers. The sound is completely normal on all '04+ F150's. Some tend to be a little louder than others, but in no way is it harmful to the motor.

At least this is what all the different dealers have told myself and my friends. I would like to think I am being told the truth, but not completely convinced. My truck has been making a slight "knocking" sound, the dealer did say that that was not very normal, they want me to go in and have them look at it again. I will post again when I find out what is behind this.

For now, can anyone else confirm that it is in fact the injectors and not the cam phasers that are making this ticking sound? I had an '86 F250 351W that made a somewhat similar tic, this turned out to be roller style lifters, unrelated all together, but funny how the sound was so much the same.
