Angry 2003 F150 Dead!!

Hello all.

This is my first post on this forum so please bear with me. I have a 2003 F150 5.4L Supercab. Yesterday just after getting off the interstate the engine started running rough. I was only 4 miles from home so I slowed down. The engine continued to run very rough and the “check engine soon” light came on. After a couple of minutes the light went out. This did this twice in the short drive. When I got home I hooked up my OBDII meter (Scangauge II) but no codes. I started & stopped a couple of times; it ran rough but no codes. Because it just started to rain, I assumed (or was hoping) something got wet. The next morning it started right up, checked for codes then it died. It would not restart. Acts as though there is no spark.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated before I call tow truck to dealer.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Bruce…

95,000 miles, well maintained

I'm not an expert, although there are many on here, and no that is not sarcasm. I just know what happened when my truck did the same thing. Check your coils.

Thanks for the responses. I had not considered the Fuel Filter. I'll change that tonight. Often my mind wonders to worse case scenarios. Also, on reading these forums, it looks like I am due for a coil change.

95k is time for a tuneup (plugs, fuel filter, possibly COP's) if it's never been done.

not sure if u mod ur f150 but if its ur coils and u need a tune up.. i would check out troyers ignition upgrade kit.. it comes with the best plugs, wires and coil packs.. for ur truck i believe its 330 for urs.. not sure how much it would cost if u went with other brands but maybe u should compare.. ands whats wrong with a little power also.. does anyone have these.. i remember getting new plugs and wires but not replacing my coils... i plan to go with these when i hit 125000 except for mine is the 4.6..

All these replys are great! Hopefully I can get the truck running tonight. I had the dealer do a tune-up which included plugs, pvc, fuel filter & transmission service @ 68,000 miles. Also did transmission service @ 87,000. I've made no mods to truck & all parts including oil & filter changes have been motorcraft.

Any other comments appericated!

****, the 5.4 uses COP, not wires and coil packs.

Wintek, it's quite possible you are having a COP and/or boot issue.

Only the check engine light came on, not the battery light?

This is a fuel filter issue... Honest - I wouldn't run it or try to start anymore until it's been changed, you may damage your injectors.
Just change it - it may take a couple starts to get the prime and pressure to like each other again - it will straighten out..

I don't care about that - the injectors need prime - then a certain amount of air needs to bleed to work properly - I went thru all that crap when replacing injectors - It took forever to start with the new ones.. Which ever ones he's running dry might take a little bit to staighten out at first. If she doesn't fire after the filters been changed , you may have to burp it thru the shrader valve.

That's what I meant Patrick
