P0401 Error Code - What does really it mean?
Hi,
I'm new to the site, and wondered if you guys could help me understand error code P0401 "EGR Flow Insufficient"
I have a totally stock 2001 F150 4.6 Super Crew.
What does this really mean and how would I go about resolving?
Thanks, Paul

That is one of the most commonly discussed fault codes here. You should be able to find out all you need in less that two minutes.
SEARCH keyword "Pxxxx" where "xxxx" is your fault code.

I am not positive about this particular engine but, I believe it means that the passage that circulates exhaust gas back to the intake is partially blocked with carbon and restricting the flow of exhaust gas. The passage needs to be cleaned. I am sure some persons familiar with this engine will chime in and tell you how to clean it. You can also do a search on cleaning egr and probably find out how to do it.
Yea, make sure you get the right one - I think you might have that funky lookin one in that model year. Theres three types.
Find yours on the truck . Grab the part # off it. The series/type # is sectioned in the middle. Before and after #'s won't matter ..
The dealership will cross reference the number- that's where you want to purchase a new one at anyway. Just make sure you give them the part # yourself so you end up with the right one. If you just say you need a DPFE sensor , you might end up with the other type - that's happened in the past..
NOTE: Your problem could be in the throttle body ports as well- the EGR port has been known to partially clog - enough to effect flow..
Oh !! Thanks for the complement Bubba ( :

Opened the hood to replace the DPFE and found a squirrels nest....darn animal chewed through the green pressure tube going to the DPFE near the rubber boot. I cut the rough edge and put on the boot with enough room to re-attach....No more SES codes!!!
