Engine swap Q's 01 4.6/auto into an 00 w/ a 5 speed

Long story short, I'm planning on hearing that my truck is totaled and I need a replacement. Basically I want CHEAP, not getting another payment so a new or even comparable used truck is out. Now, I found this " 2000 FORD F150 4X4 5 SPEED TRITON 4.6L V8 NEEDS MOTOR WORK, SOLD AS IS, HANDY MAN SPECIAL Cash customers welcome. "

My truck is an 01 SCREW 4.6, auto, 4WD. I don't think that there will any engine management issues with me just taking the engine out and swapping engines straight up. However what if I take the engine/trans/transfer case out of my old truck and put in this one? Will I also need to swap computers? Anything I'm missing?

Motor swap no computer work needed. Stick to auto or vice versa computer work will be required. Swapping the entire system will be fine. If you want to swap motors typically you need flywheel/ and starter at least on older motors. If you buyback your truck, you have a full donor vehicle to work with. Seems like fun. Do you have the time, tools and a location to do such a swap? Weather it be a motor swap or a drivetrain swap. If you dont have the details in order you'll just cost yourself more money than you will save.

Time? I can make it somehow.
Tools? Pretty much, need a torque wrench though
Place to do it? Ha, running the clock in my driveway. The city doesn't like partial cars all over the place.

I mean like a engine lift. Possibly a tranny jack.

I have an engine hoist available. I could possible rig my floor jack up to use as a trans jack. Possibly not. The big problem is that I would have to burn through the swap as quickly as possible.

You will need the PCM, wire harness and the instrument cluster from the 01 to make the complete swap work. The engine swap is easy like you said just swap it and be done. you will need to transfer the flywheel from the manual to your auto and re route a few lines but that is it. If you bring the automatic over you will need the PCM from the auto to make it work. Unfortunately both trucks have PATS and their instrument clusters are matched to their PCMs. Using the 01 PCM and harness in the 00 will result in a no start.

Damn, never thought about PATS. Good catch. I would be LIVID if I did all that work for a no start. How much extra time is added if I had to swap the PCM and instrument cluster? A simple swap is now looking like a PITA. Not from the wrench turning aspect, just the time and location. A straight engine swap would be easiest, but man, 215k on a trans is pushing it IMO. Don't want to do all that work to have the trans take a dump on me.

Pulling instrument cluster should take no more than an hour. You could have the PATS disabled by using a chip or programmer with a custom setting. Mine is disabled for now. Long story short I broke my PCM and used a spare till I could get it fixed. I just never got around to having it changed back.

Awesome thanks. I honestly doubt that I'd get a chip or programmer for my truck, especially one that I pieced together like that. I love my truck and like my toys but I really don't care to dump excess money into one right now. They are tools to me, I use them to drive, haul stuff, pull stuff, and occasionally run shiat over with. In all honesty if I buy this 2000 with a blown motor it will just be transportation until I can get what I want.
