Cool safe rpm??

i have an 05 screw with the 5.4. I recently bought an edge programer for it and was wondering does any body know how high i can set it to rev safely? right now i have it at 6000 and shifting from 1/2 at 5900 and the truck screams meanness to any one near by.

heres a link to a post with a couple of peope that posted tehre best settings for the edge. I think that is a bit to high for shift points but thats just IMHO. It might do you some good to read this post and see what they are using. The 5.4 builds a ton of torque low and if you run it to high you will lose that ability. After a point it does no good. I even see this in my 4.6. I lose power at about 5200 and it does no good to keep going so that is where i shift.

I concur, do a torque converter search here. You will find that several senior members and employees of the windsor plant will validate me in that the stock converter is not designed to be spun over 5400 RPM for any length of time. You end up with the ballooning affect and this is $$$$$ to fix. You need to drop the rev limiter back down to 5200. Your truck is actually losing torque and power after that. Do a search of some stock dyno pics here too. You will see that curve drop off pretty quick after 5000 rpm or there abouts.

+1 ^^ Good info.

I have seen a couple of posts suggesting that the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts can be set up to 5,600 with a stock converter without being too risky. These shift points help to keep the engine in the power band between gears. 6,000 is asking for trouble.

Your not going to Destroy your truck. Just find a happy medium and the nyoull be happy. I bet if you change your shift points down a bit youll never know the differance.!!!!!

Asuming there are no codes set, you may have a problem with the mass air meter or the PCM programming being lean.
The only way to tell is have a dealer tech look at this parameter for being in limits or near the edge of the limits.
If this is found, the only way is to determine if there is a problem with the air meter or a reprogram solution to the PCM, assuming there is no other issue.
It's a lot like a carb that has it's needles adjusted to lean. The motor has a hard time igniting the mix the same everytime every cylinder for smoothness.
A rich condition would tend to make the motor role some if the OX senors didn't correct enough.
Again, the only way to see this is by using test equipment and addressing the parameters for observation and compairing to specs.

You say this very well grasshopper.
It is funny that the part about power dropping off at a certain rpm didn't register. There is no use i killing a perfectly good truck that is for sure!
