2.73's are just awful. No wonder you are having issues, I bet 5th gear is essentially useless. If you went to 3.55's, that right there would be a world of difference. My chart says that in 4th at 65 mph with 30" tires you are now turning 1987 rpm, with 3.55's that would be 2584. I have 3.55's in my V6, and I don't even have to give it gas to get it rolling in 1st, just slip out the clutch.

I like driving fast, and having a strong driveline. So I'd toss the Mazda & keep the 2.73s. I'm on 3.08s now, and it does just fine pushing my 3-ton Bronco up over 110mph with the 4.9L on 32s, or towing another 10,000 lbs a little slower. The difference is the deep granny first of my NP435 trans. But if I had the chance to swap in a ZF, I'd do it in a heartbeat to get an OD.

If you are gonna do the work yourself, the easiest thing to do is get a whole compatible rear end at the boneyard. Just changing the gearset requires specialized tools and knowledge.

1. The rear end ASSEMBLY would have be compatible with your TRUCK. Has nothing to do with ratio.
2. Now you should start looking for transmissions instead - I will yield to Steve on that and the chip question.

1) A 3.55.
2) Do maintenance.
3) No, and it wouldn't fix the trans or rear end anyway.

You're moving WAAAAYYYY too fast. Slow down. Learn about your truck & how you're using it. Maintain it. Repair it. Understand how it works. In a year or 2, start thinking about modifications.

Steve, if a Mazda box is popping out of 4th (direct) do you think this is now a good excuse for him to look for a NP or a ZF with a granny and just keep the 2.73's?

So you've KNOWN that your trans was messed up, and you're just telling us now? This is like pulling teeth!

If the trans is damaged, you can't just slap a couple of parts in it & expect it to be right. Rebuild or replace it.

This is why I said to go find a NP or ZF and put that in there instead of wasting money on a gear change at this time...........

Steve and I were not on the same page at the beginning of this thread but we sure are now.
