Question Blown Plug repair kits

On Sunday I blew a plug on my 1999 5.4 F-150. The dealer say $3500 to fix. They want to replace the head, etc, etc. I know that there are countles threads regarding this "problem", but I have not seem any threads that talk about the plug repair kits that are available (about $400). I'd love to know if anyone has tried one of these kits and, if so, how did it work? Thanks.

I was just browsing the forum for basic info knowledge when I came across your thhread. Look I just wanted to say that I is not necessary, which you have already figured out, to replace the head. I had a plug on my 01 Expy blow out too. After fixing it myself the first time with a tap and locktight , which I don't recommend, the second time I brought to my mechanic whom I trust very much but is just real pricey. He put a Helicoil in the head and a champion spark plug with more threads on the plug to hold better than The Autolites with about half the threads. That was last summer and I haven't had a problem since. Knock on wood. If you change plugs just be careful the clearance to the piston face is real tight and if you put it in to far you could mash the plug and damage the piston. I hope this helps a little if any.

I agree. I'm not considering replacing the head (at least not yet). All that I have read about the solid inserts seem to indicate that the repaired plug hole will be stronger that the original. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!
