per service manual is fine, when the gap needs to be small due to low voltage, and regardless of what the ecm sends in terms of voltage, does not determine the strength of the spark, the signal sent to the coil is just telling it to fire. How much voltage tha coil itself can generate is what determines spark strength. Anyway, if you keep the gap close, sure, it will work fine, but if you've got the extra voltage to be able to disperse the spark over a larger distance and still have enough energy for the spark to be sufficiant, you will have a more complete burn, making more power. i dont know where you get this idea of "countering" the ecm. wanna explain?
Why would you set gap that isn't recommended ? I believe it's .52-.56. What do you know that would benefit these motors over service manual procedures? If your getting better performance and MPG's just because your coils include more copper in there windings therefore allowing you to adjust gap out of tolerance - which also adds to MPG's and performance, I'm curios to know how and why..
