The function of a windage tray is to keep the oil in the pan from spashing from side to side during hard cornering. This keeps the bottom of the oil pick up tube submerged in oil so it won't suck air.

Droping the oil pan i nthe 4.6 or 5.4 is a B*^ch. You cant just move it around and pull it out. You have to drop your front axle and the support. Takes about 2 hours with air and some help. Unless someone has found a way to move it around that that i havn't heard off.

Or while rocking back and forth on a trail.

It won't, however, keep the sump wet for extended periods of time, eventually, the oil will leave.

Probably not too useful unless you're doing a lot of pre-running or something.

I thought that that is what a baffled oil pan does. I had a windage tray on my 5.0 and i can tell you that it wouldnt do a thing as far as oil sloshing to the sides of the pan or from front to back. While a windage tray keeps the oil in the sump of the pan it does that because its keeping the oil off the crank. When the crank is spinning and has to go through oil its more resistance and robs power. The windage tray keeps the oil from splashing up on the crank and helps the oil drain to the bottom so it can cool down a bit and then make its way back through the engine.

I heard you can move it around enough to get a wrench on the pick up tube nuts. Take the nuts loose and you can get t off without pulling the support.

Looks tight to me , what do you think ? and how did your pickup screen look in your 98 - was it pretty clean?
