4.6 HP question

I have seen online where a 1998 4.6l is rated at 220 Hp and a 2001 4.6 is rated at 260 Hp .... Is this all in tuning or why the jump in numbers. Can one swap a 2001 or newer engine into a 1998 model truck????

yah it will swap over just fine, just get the newer PCM too.

halfway through 2000 year model they released the "PI heads" (performace improved) better flowing heads means more air, means more fuel, means more power

A '01 4.6L is rated 260 hp?

God Almighty, I'm TRYING to get my '05 4.6 up to 260!!

Maybe I just oughta stick an '01 plant under the hood..

LOL , you have it , you just can't use it without a tune

That sucks , but that's what you have to do to release those ponies

Hell , I'm only @ 235 and can smoke a 3 valve without a tune - dune that many times over @ Hillstech Drive.

I won't race one with a tune, Intake and exhaust. What's the point

Yeah , that's all it is - Some had PI's in 2000 , I thought they all did in 01.

Just make sure whatever motor you use has PI heads , it will say on the heads themselves "PI" -

If I was pulling a fithwheel , I sure as hell wouldn't swap a 4six in - I would go with the 5four for torque , they swap in almost just as easy .. Makes a BIG difference and it's what the motor is built to do best - it does..

wow, you guys just got my attention on this thread. So jbrew, all we would need is a tune as in dyno tune right, any intake and an exhaust system? What would the cheapest of this setup would cost us? What do you think a regular dyno tune would do? Thanks in advance?

That was for the 2004 on up - the 3valves.

You have an 01.

Question

Ok, I'm confused. I didn't think Ford had ever put a 4.6 rated at 260hp if the F-150's. The mustang got a 260hp version around that time period, but I don't think the trucks did. If I'm not mistaken, isn't the current 4.6 in the F-150's only rated at 232hp?

I know the explorers are getting a 3v 4.6 rated at 292hp, but not the F-150's. I think something is documented wrong somewhere, or someone misread.

On a side note, the 5.4's were rated at 260hp for awhile...

Mike

I am confused as well. I hope someone can answer or straighten me out. The link I posted still says that they made a 4.6L rated at 260 Hp in both 00/01. Can someone please make the pain go away????

So jbrew, since all my belt accessories are on a 6 rib system, and not the older truck 8 rib belts does that mean i have a mustang 4.6

I don't know what you guys are talking about

The HP ratings are on the spec sheet , I figured the 260hp jump was when the PI's came into the picture . The spec sheet link is posted above , I think the second or third post down from this page..

Yes , I believe so Patrick , BE CAREFUL towing with that thing with that stang motor. - It might freak and go lame when you tie something to the back of her.
