Engine Bogging

Well, I just got off the phone with the dealer where I took my truck to try to solve the bogging problem. The service rep tells me that "we can't do a diagnostic unless you put the stock air intake back on." BS!!!! I don't even have it anymore! I'm almost at my wits end with this issue. I replaced the fuel filter, no help. I had my tranny serviced, no help. (both needed it anyway) And now, if even the dealer will not help me, I think I'm screwed I do have a tuner on the way, should I try it and see if that will remedy the bogging? I can't think straight until this issue gets solved.

Any engine or o/d lite on, or any other driveability type concern? Does the exhaust smell bad, high mileage, high fuel consumption? Have you done anything on your own before you brought it to the dealer?

No CEL or O/D light flashing. Just bogging down on accelleration. Revs perfect in neutral. I looked at the MAF, seemed clean, took off the throttle body, not too dirty, but gave it a good cleaning anyway, and as said before, I changed the fuel filter, and had a tranny shop do a pan-drop fluid and filter change. <60k miles, no abnormal fuel consumption

Go to another Ford dealer. Refusing to run a diagnostic just because the air intake has been changed is ridiculous. Frankly, it is a free country, so yes, I suppose the Ford dealer is not breaking any laws refusing to work on your truck, but you are also free to go somewhere else with your money!

This is the first time I have heard of such a thing. That the dealer might try to blame whatever is wrong on your modifications, well, that I would not be surprised to hear. Regardless, I just can't fathom them just refusing to work on it at all. Very strange...

On a side note, don't forget to check your coil packs or COP's, whichever for your truck. Poor spark could lead to poor performance. Also check the fuel rail pressure at idle, and under load.

Later,
Mike

my 01 does that.

What you describing is exaclty what my 01 5.4L screw does. It's only thrown one code and then reset it and never came back. Tunred out to be a misfire on #8 so I'm going to replace all my cop's and plugs this week. But just as you described it. I can sit there and reve it and sounds great but the moment I take if for a driver and try and jump on it it boggs down like its getting no gas or something. But luckely I got the CEL to come on once and never since. So I'll keep you posted.

hivoltage yours is a 05 right?? cat converters are waranteed i think for 8 years /80k miles. have the dealer chek it out. you hook up a vacumn gauge to a good intake vacumn source and the gauge can tell you if there is a restriction in the exhaust. do a search and im sure you can find more details about the process.

I'd check the cats too, especially if they're under warranty. I had a 1990 dodge that was find at low rev but at about 2k rmp it bogged out and spewed a lot of black smoke. The smoke was due to running rich because of the restricted air flow through the engine. It had throttle body injectors and did not monitor air flow, the newer systems do measure air intake and may not allow it to run rich, so no smoke.

Well, I got an intake from a buddy, anf I'm on the way BACK to the dealer tomorrow morning. The truck still bogs with the OEM air cleaner assembly. If they don't get it fixed, I guess I'm off to the ford dealer in Crestview or Pensacola.

Update

Well, I got the truck back from the dealer. They re-flashed the PCM, and preformed the injector cleaner process. Runs alot better now. I just put my K&N back on, and tuned the truck with the SC 1714 I got from ebay and it is even better. Overall, I also think that I got some bad gas. My low fuel indicator came on today on my way home from work, so tomorrow I will fill 'er up and add 2 bottles of STP fuel treatment. That should have her running better than new. I'm so glad the bogging is gone

I think it all in the tune myself - from 2004 on up , the tune is terrible right form the factory (The XCAL 2 is a good tuner). The intake upgrade just made it worse because with stock tunes it doesn't know what to do with the air.

Also , when you upgrade the air coming in , you need to increase the flow going out.

The cheap way is to gut the front cats and get a good after market muffler.

Replacing the 4 cats with one high-flow on each side and a good cat back system makes those 3 valves fly..It's also emission friendly.

I am so fing pi$$ed right now. My truck is doing the same thing after spending $400 at the dealership to fix the problem. I am taking it back with the demand that it be fixed, or I will take my $$ and business to the other ford dealership 60 miles away and I won't be back. And I'm not paying a dime more.

I told yuh what have to do - I would search it out in the forums before you waste anymore money - If you don't trust what I'm telling you - Just use the search bare, type in keywords in the engines forum. This problem has been around for awhile and you can find others that's been thru this w/search bar ..

I've had the K&N and my exhaust for almost a year now, with no problems. This just started a few weeks ago. I'm taking it back to the dealer tomorrow. I will tell them to check the cats. Are the cats covered under warranty? Someone replied in this thread and stated that they were warranteed for 80k miles. Is that true?
BTW, I have searched and read every post regarding the bogging issue and concluded that there are several problems that could cause this. I am not a mechanic, so I can't perform most of the suggestions myself.
