synthetic oil and filter??????
synthetic oil and filter??????
I know the subject has been beat to death, but iv done a search and couldnt come up with for what i was looking for. Im looking for a synthetic oil that will go 7500 miles. Im looking for something other than mobile 1. Also looking for an oil filter that will last that long. Any help would be appreciated.
I also want a good oil filter wrench for our trucks any help or link for that would be great.
Thanks
Ryan

Good Luck , I would never do that to a motor.
I use what my manual says as far as spec/ratings, change every 3000 miles.
I use Castrol 50/50 - but theres quite a few good brands out there, I'm just sticken to what I've always used for the last 220 thousand in this truck..
As far as filters - Nothing but Motorcraft ..

I guess I'm the only one here who has ever read the factory manual. My '05 & '06 manuals say standard oil changes are 5000 miles. The '07 manual also says 5000, but the dealer service departments say there is a supplement for standard oil changes which are now set at 7500 miles. No need to use synthetic, but I see no reason why you couldn't use the "new" standard 7500 mile interval with 1 filter.
I've been on the 5000 mile interval for about 15 years now with no problems to report. Oil in the 5.4L engines is still rather clean at 5000. I use nothing but Castrol GTX and Fram oil filters. My older vehicles get what-ever is cheaper at Sam's Club (usually Havoline). For an oil filter wrench, I use a traditional style "Heavy Duty" one with an elbo ($8 at Wal-Mart).

I just have to throw in my past experience here. I have heard the 3,000 mile or death oil change theory so much I just can't stand it.
My last truck was an '01 Dodge Ram 1500 with 318 v8. I put over 250,000 miles on that truck. I never ever ever changed the oil at anything less than 7 or 8000 miles. Usually more like 10,000 miles. I used Castrol Syntec fully synthetic the entire time.
And as for duty..lol
I am an asphalt contractor. My Ram towed asphalt roller's.. a 10,000lb seal machine.. trailer's with small equipment.. you name it ..
When I sold the Dodge.. at 250,000 miles.. with this oil change interval.. it had never been in the shop once.. It had started to use oil.. Yep, it used about a half a quart a month..

Kidding dude - I run a Cat 14G finish grade, just up ahead of you guys usually.

Most any synthetic can go 7500 miles
I would suggest you go to BITOG and hit the thread where everyone is posting their Oil Lab results.
Even Motorcraft's 5w20 blend will go 6100 miles in my 5.4 and still have a TBN of 3.
There was a lengthy article written a few years back on the Taxi cabs in NYC and they did tear down several motors. The comparison was clear. There was no difference in the motors that had oil changes every 3K vs every 6K.
You'd have to find and read the article for specifics, but you need to do what makes you happy.
I know guys that work at dealers that change their oil every 2K miles religiously. But, mainly because they get a discount. To each his own.
I'd do a test round on a synthetic in your motor. Run 5K miles on your choice of oil, take out a 2 oz. sample, then have an analysis done. That will tell you for sure the characteristics of any given oil in your motor.
It is my opinion based on my past labs and friends/family that you can easily go 7500 miles on any of the following: Amsoil, Royal Purple, Neo, Redline, Mobil 1, Leading Edge, Motor Craft synthetic 5w20, Penzoil Platinum, Castrol Syntec, and Lucas.
I prefer any of the filters: Motorcraft, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Wix/Napa Gold, Purolator. The motorcraft filter is dirt cheap at wallyworld, $3.28. Can't beat that.

lol.. somebody's gotta keep those grade guys movin'; along
Actually. like I said.. the Dodge never missed a day.. As for sludge .. who knows?? but it DID have 250,000 miles.. not too bad.. and if I was ruining the engine.. I doubt it would have run that long.. especially in the severe service conditions it was operated in.. Memphis summer's are not very forgiving...
