Hello,
I have a 2001, 4.6 L with about 83,000 miles. The engine check light came on. I went to Checker and had the codes checked and it came up with the EGR valve several times. I replaced the EGR and the light is still on. The Haynes manual states that it may take 40 warm starts to reset the light but I have had the new part on for maybe one month. I checked the PCV valve and it seems fine.
Any other things I am missing?

I can guarantee that:
1) It was a P0401 code
2) It was mis-diagnosed
3) It ain't fixed
P0401 is one of the most common faults discussed here. Five minutes of reSEARCHing should be enough to get you on track.

99% of the time, the check engine light comes on in Ford & Mazda trucks for code P0401 (insufficient EGR flow). And, 99% of the time, the EGR valve is good. The two main culprits are (1) The DPFE sensor (2) The EGR ports in the intake elbo are clogged.
I don't know about 99% of the time - I would say most of time it is a 401 code.
I've gotten 402, 406 before .
It's easy enough to go get the numbers to be sure , I would do that before replacing the DPFE or taking your TB and elbow apart - could be the EGR popet valve.

Yes the 401 code does seem familiar. I had it checked several times over the last 6 months. I already checked the egr ports in the intake elbo and cleaned them out even though they did not look clogged to me.
I don't know where the DPFE sensor is located or the EGR popet valve.

If you have the 401 code - then replace the DPFE Sensor
Ford updated these recently , unfortunatly the updated version can only be had at the dealerships. Third party auto suppliers don't carry the updated versions yet as far as I know .

I've been getting the same 401 code on my 02 4.6. I cleaned the inlets in the intake manifold/throttle body. Thought that would do the trick but it came back with the same code. I followed the directions in the Hayne's book and checked the DPFE sensor and EVR regulator voltages, and they were all normal. The DPFE sensor is in a different location on my truck, it's right on top of the EGR tube, and is a lot smaller than yall's picture.

As far as I know that's the stock piece. The truck was originally bought new by the company my dad works for to be used as a daily driver, for a big shot to just drive around in. They sell the vehicles when they reach a certain mileage, this one is pushin 150k, and so my dad bought it. I don't think that the company would put anything aftermarket on the truck, with the exception of strobe/service lights. That's not the new sensor from Ford is it? It's a genuine Ford sensor.

Also when I checked the voltage on the TPS, Hayne's said that it should read between .5 to 1v at closed throttle and increase to between 4 and 5v at WOT. That was just not the case on mine. It read 4.5v at closed and steadily decreased as I opened the throttle. I had everything hooked up like the book said, but that just doesn't seem right. Perhaps the TPS is the problem cause the 401 code. What do yall think?
