Engine quit on a hill

I was in the wife's 01 Expedition. I parked on an inclined driveway and got out to unload some stuff and the engine first sputtered and then just quit. It acted like it ran out of gas but it had a quarter of a tank. Anyone else had this happen?

It prolly did run out of gas. I've seen this happen before on an Expy. Had about a 1/4 tank on a hill and wouldnt start. Pushed it to a flat surface and it started right up. Might be something with the tank design letting the gas flow away from the pickup

Just how steep was this hill, your pump pick-up probably went dry.

Thanks for the reply guys.

The driveway is fairly steep, I'm not sure in degrees maybe 5 to 10. It must have been fuel starvation. I let it roll to a flat portion on the driveway and it started and ran fine. Front end was low so the fuel pickup must be tward the rear of the tank. We had a 97 Expy also my wiife said it happened to her with the old one on the same driveway.
