Exclamation Royal purple..How long between changes?

Hey guys, I just swapped my motor oil to royal purple full synthetic today and i was wondering how often you guys think i should switch it up. Because I should be able to go longer then the regular 3000 miles with the new fully synthetic right? What would u guys recommend?

Thanks in advance

What filter did you put in? I would think it might depend a little on that, right?

their website says 12,000 miles between full changes, w/ filter and a top off at each 3k miles. I am trying that right now with my 03 Ex 4.6l. I have now runn 3 changes of RP, but this is the first really long term rotation that I am trying. Previuously w/out intermittant filters I did about 5500 miles and it look like it was just time for a change.

i'd suggest having your oil analyzed at around 6k if you plan to try and extend towards the 12k oci--just so you can monitor things

Considering Ford recommends 7,500 mile intervals with regular oil, I would think you could EASILY do 12,000 miles. Just swap the filter at 7,500 to be safe.

I know with other fully synthetic oils like Amsoil they say you can do 15,000 between changes

RP is supposed to be all that and a bag of chips, so I can't see why it couldn't match that too

RP will go a good long time

I sent a sample to Blackstone at just over 3000 miles using a mobil 1 filter. The sample was RP 5w20. Analysis including TBN was excellent. Wear metals were less than average, just about trace amounts only. The TBN was still 9.6.

My brother ran the exact same oil in his F150 for 13K miles and an Amsoil EAO filter. TBN was still good: 4.4. He changed the oil anyway even though it probably could have gone another 2K without a hitch.

My wife's Odyssey has RP 5w20 in it now (changed it at 50K), and from previous analysis, I do not plan on changing it until it gets at least 12K on it. I'm using the Amsoil EAO filters.

As stated sending the oil out to be checked for life expectancy is a good idea. I would start at 7500 and get it checked. Everything looks good go to 10k. I personally wouldnt go much past 10k, oil is not that expensive. And never try to eyeball your oil for contaminents, color means nothing unless its just plain burnt

Agree. Try 5,000 and if you want to go significantly further, have oil tested by Blackstone at say 7,500.

If the goal is extended oil changes, why not use an oil built for it. I would suggest Amsoil and their EAO filter. I'm not impressed with the RP formulation and personally, I'm not sure how they are getting around overbasing. Any of you that are using the newer RP have any oil consumption issues since you used it? With a TBN as high as the published data I can't help but think that glazing of the cylinders is going to happern and oil consumption go up.

Labnerd, I have used RP in my wife's Odyssey much longer than in my F150 and the oil has never ever been low. For the few thousand miles I've used it in my truck, and what my brother has used in his, we've never noticed any oil consumption.

Odd that you mention oil consumption as my neighbor just changed his 99 F150 over to RP from Mobil 1. He was already using oil....about 1 quart every 1500 miles if I recall. He went from 5w30 Mobil 1 to RP 10w 40 to see if that would help. He's actually driving down to London, KY (about 200 miles) and reports that the motor "feels/sounds" better. It will be interesting to see if he winds up using even more oil.

I am particularly curious about your comment on not being impressed with RP's chemistry. What exactly is your concern or issue? I've noticed that this oil will go a long time between OCIs just like the Amsoil I use. (but I prefer Amsoil).
