Engine sticks at low RPM

Randomly my F150 5.4 will simply "stick" at a given RPM when driving. Usually it is when I'm at a low RPM and when I try to accelerate it will not. This is very random, and I can sometimes drive for miles working fine and then it will happen. Usually hitting the pedal to the floor a few time will unstick it and will work okay for a time again. Real problem in traffic.
Any suggestions on how I should proceed to fix this one?
Drop me an email if you have a good idea on this,,, appreciate it..

Thanks
PDH

What YEAR is the truck? Is it throttle-by-wire, or is there a real throttle cable attached to the pedal?

If you have a throttle cable, replace it. Mine stuck on me when I was passing someone. The inside of the housing had broken down and was causing it to stick at a certain point.
